music is pleasure to the ears of a race that consumes and destroys its home/host so in a sense we are a virus

we invented the word virus to describe the life cycle of said "viruses" that live vicarious their hosts.
Similar as we invented the word light, to describe anything that is illuminated by light in this supposed "dream" we are all having

well that question is impossible to answer, because we cannot read minds or thoughts... especially those of single celled organisms.

Ah... That was me.. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/12487099#12487099

And that was implying that world is dominated by chimps who have no idea what the fuck is going on around them.

What i meant by that quote is that everyone is so obsessed with their own personal agendas and fail to realize the bigger picture - which is abhorrently clear in the GE argument.

GE is going to save the world, if we give it the chance. I do not want to start insulting people so i will simply leave you with a request..

Before you become opinionated on something as vitally important to our future as GE. Can you please, for the love of all things good in this world - do some research before you start voicing any opinions? And i mean proper research, shit - do a first-year microbiology paper at college. I highly recommend it, it will only cost a couple hundred bucks and you will come out so much more the wiser.

This matter is far too important to have people who have no idea what they are talking about fucking up this golden opportunity we have before us.

GE is a truly amazing technology with so many tremendously valuable applications, we can create any resource we could ever want - in completely environmentally friendly ways. We can decontaminate the seas, soils and atmosphere. We can harness the sun and GE microbes to make any huge array of resources, from food-products, to complex polymers and fuels.

The word virus is actually latin for poison, which is what people thought viral infections were before science btw..

Well im glad i could stroke your ego as you posted one good quote in the past.
I definately agree with you that there are GREAT potential benefits in this new feat of human existance.
But your post was very condescending, and i HIGHLY doubt you have done Much more research than i have concerning this subject, and in my own PERSONAL belief that human beings are inherently eveil, something like this kind of technology will most likely lead to a negative outcome. But hey opionions and assholes.

scientist have been doing this for years , its been a top secret project for a while now. this is how they artificially developed AIDS and spread it among blacks and gays targeting them to try killing off all homos and Negros. the synthetic properties of the proteins are extracted from ALIEN DNA!

It isn't true synthetic life.  They didn't make life, they copied a blueprint of life.  Akin to pistol packing a blunt, you didn't roll a blunt, but you end up with a blunt nonetheless.  They had previously failed because one nucleotide was not in place, out of some million (or multi-million, can't remember what I read).  It is groundbreaking, but it is NOT synthetic life.

I wonder if the guy is gonna get a nobel prize for that shit.

Its sort of reminiscent of nuclear energy. Could be used to kill or to save. I guess both of these will come into being one day.

But those guys suck! They used a preemptied mycoplasmic cell with ready-to-use ribosomes and lipid bilayer and all that essential shit. And they simply copied the sequence.

Then again this is absolutely amazing. Chemically synthesizing a string of million purines and pyrimidines that could self-replicate is dope.

But making everything from scratch is a different story. Like designing the 3D conformation of a set of proteins/ribozymes and that can maintain their own propagation. Then translate the aminoacid/ribonucleotide sequence into the chemically stable structure of DNA. Then resuspend with phosphoinositol or something and make little self-replicating bubbles.

Now that would amazing.

Not that im dissing the achievement. Right on the contrary.

"Chemically synthesizing a string of million purines and pyrimidines that could self-replicate is dope"

Stringing them together is dopest part, the fact that it replicates gets back to the dopeness of life.  If you have the correct base sequence, then it will replicate.  That's life. Not synthetic life.

True, they had to use existing cells to do it.

But what they have done is far form insignificant

They can program cells to do mans desire now
something that was only the dreams of sci-fi writers until now

the ramifications of this will be felt for many years to come

This is what I'm trying to get at... They CANNOT program cells to do whatever they like.  What they have proven is that if you put together a chain of working nucleotides, they will self replicate inside of a shell of a cell, with no genetic information.  I read that out of the million or so base pairs, they got ONE wrong previously, and it didn't work.  This is far from being able to get cells to do what we want.

I'm not trying to downplay the significance, what I am saying is it is not synthetic life.  They used natural chemicals, and an already known base sequence to make an identical copy of natural life, synthetically.  Synthesize DMT or extract it, you still have DMT.
