Caps changing color, normal?
    #12597644 - 05/20/10 11:48 AM (14 years, 7 months ago)

I've noticed that as my mushrooms mature and the caps begin to open the caps also change color a bit.  The outside edge gets more pale while the center of the cap stays more golden in color.  I've harvested several mushrooms and they all appear healthy...

I'm also still having problems with several small mushrooms and a few good sized ones per cake.  Also most of my caps are not symmetrical at all.

I don't see what's the problem here? Everything you listed is completely normal.

Except most of them are about 1" tops LOL.  They are Brazilians, my best one was about 3" with a cap that opened up nicely.  I'm trying a monotub next....

Small mushrooms can be a sign of low water content of the cake.

you have to remember your dealing with MS and they are cakes, dont expect monsters all the time

yaknow, i my brazilians were short and squat too, but meaty. reports of above average potency too.
is that the first flush?
later ones should produce larger shrooms.

One more quick question....

I noticed that the shrooms I let drop spores before picking have a tendency to turn purpilish/black around the edge of the cap?  If you wipe your finger on it, it comes off.

I'm assuming this is just related to it dropping spores, or having spores dropped on it.  Should I clean this off before drying or doesn't it matter?

Thanks

They are just spores, personally I don't bother wiping them off, they are just spores

you should write your name in the spores for good luck.

Those ARE the spores, and they're harmless. You've seen a spore print before right? No need to clean them off, but many people like to harvest right as the veil breaks so they don't get a sporetastic mess in their FC.

Great. Thanks all.

And although I'm getting mixed small and decent sized fruits, the weight isn't bad, from 3 cakes I've gotten almost 160g wet, so should be about 16g dry.  Pretty good IMO for a first-timer, and certainly enough for me and some buddies to experiment with!!
