Light cycle question 18-6? Purpose of Dark Cycle?

Hi All Say one were interested in combining 2 hobbies due to space and electricity constrictions: Could you fruit trays in a martha under 18 hours of light and 6 hours of darkness? What about 24 hours of light and 0 hours of dark? What exactly does the dark part of the light cycle due for cubes? What is the minimum hours of darkness that cubes require? I've always done 12 on and 12 off but if I could do 16 on anjd 8 off it would really help solve a lot of logisitc problems for me. Thanks in advance Shaq

Chances are good that's the wrong color ligt and the mushrooms won't even "see" it. So you can just add a CFL or two, on a 12/12 timer.
18/6 would work if the color temp is in the right range.
-------------------- You make it all possible. Doesn't it feel good?

Metal Halide will work fine, as it's the blue end of the spectrum (like a 6500K CFL), however HPS is near the red end of the spectrum and so is not suitable.
You should be using an MH though in veg, so it could still work

Thanks for the replies. What do you think of t5 flourescent lighting? Seems like that might suit fruiting and vegging? No real heat thrown off by those though. I'm interested in losing or reducing an electric heater and using the heat from an hid light to help heat the room. That was a good idea though if I used a 400 watt mh 18-6 and a cfl 12/12 and the heater 6/18 - I didn't eventhink of that - this board rules!!!!!!

From what I've read, supposedly whatever it is that the mushrooms gain from the light, is more readily applied towards growth in the dark than it is in the light (meaning basically that the mushrooms put on more weight in the dark cycle, assuming that there is a light cycle at all). I personally don't know if this is true, just something I've read. As far as pinning goes, it's supposed to be a pinning trigger, but fresh air and water evaporating is a more significant pinning trigger.
My mushrooms usually don't end up getting a dark cycle due to the fact I work at home, at night, so they get natural light during the day and room light all night, and they do fine. So, if you need to give it more light due to other things, then by all means do so. Probably the main benefit to you of the dark cycle, rather than more/bigger mushrooms or a better pinset will be the energy saved during the time the lights aren't on.

MH is around 4,000K but a 400 watt or larger makes up in intensity what it lacks in correct color temp. It's best to have mushrooms on a 12/12 schedule. an 18/6 probably isn't a deal killer either since you're already running one. However, don't go 24 hours of light because it screws up the natural day/night rhythm that mycelium(and people) require. Most growth occurs during the dark cycle. RR
