Fruits Falling off Cakes
    #12593206 - 05/19/10 04:22 PM (14 years, 7 months ago)

Unfortunately, after my dubtub's first harvest, I was forced to bury it outside in coir and verm due to the mean green.

I had a couple cakes left, so I birthed them and they are doing alright. One of the cakes is about half the size of a regular cake, as it was made in a cup. Its actually my most prolific fruiter, but it has a problem: The pins fall off WAY too easily.

I used to keep my cakes on a shelf, but to mist and fan them I had to take them off the shelf. This caused pins to fall off on this cake. I now keep them in a wicker basket, which I reach down into to mist and fan. Problem solved, or so it seemed. I had a couple shrooms going on this cake that were 7 grams apiece...I took this cake out to examine them, and when I put the cake down, they all fell off(I was gentle, knowing the previous history of this cake). They were maybe 1-2 days before the veil broke.

Why are they falling off so easily? Is there anything I can do it prevent it, now or in future grows?

To some extent it's a genetic trait, though there can be other causes as well. Too wet, or if there's contams.

No signs of contams, but it is possible they are too wet. Then again, the other fruits I have seen from this particular batch don't seem very firmly attached...

I am using soda pop FC's as it seemed pointless to build a SG FC for 3 cakes. I fan them at least 6 times a day. How can I tell if things are "too wet"?

Could just be the substrain.

Look at the base of the stems. It should have fluffy myc. If it's wet and matted, it's too wet. If the shrooms were very big, and growing off of the side, then the slightest movement will knock it off. That's PF tek

Thanks for the input... I got fluffy myc on the sides of my shrooms.
I guess the PF tek shrooms are just uber sensitive.

It's because with a cake, there's no kind of casing to help hold them on. Certainly by the time the cap is twice as big as the stem, 4-5 days, thet are in serious danger of falling off. They're just as delicious
