fruiting on straight birdseed cakes
    #1258798 - 01/29/03 11:34 AM (21 years, 23 days ago)

Has anybody tried using birdseed cakes right out of the jar with no casing? I am currently working on this using some finch-seed mix (lots of millet etc). I have done PF before, but this is my first time with grain so I am trying to work out the subtleties of casing/spawning. I did this just because I had some (overly) colonized jars sitting around. They have been in the terrarium for roughly a week and they have been looking like they were about to pin for several days (bumpy, fuzzy, hyphal knots etc) but I suspect that there is not enough water to sustain fruiting in the cakes. I am keeping the humidity as high as possible and I am using a cool-mist on a timer for air-exchange.

This is a new setup and I haven't fruited anything else in it so far... it is possible that the cakes aren't getting enough air exchange.
I guess I am just looking for some pointers etc.

thanks

Yes, you can fruit the birdseed cakes. They do take a while to get going ( in my exp.) You don't need alot of air exchange although it is good. If you are worryed about dry cakes dunk them for 24 hrs.

If you have some perlite, you can put it in a container in your chamber to boost RH.

thanks. we already have perlite in trays to add humidity. actually,
the way our setup works the perlite provides humidity and we use the
humidifier running one hour on for every three hours off to provide air
exchange.

we will try dunking + cold shocking one and leaving the other alone
tonight.
