Best grocery store poppy seeds to grow
    #12586476 - 05/18/10 03:21 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

Hi everybody , Ive heard that some poppy seed companies are using a new strain of poppy that produses vary minute amounts of morphine and are pointless to gorw. Ive bought miccormick, some from sprouts(in the bulk bins),and sadaf. A fellow member mentioned that he grew miccormicks every yeay with no problems, but the post wasnt too resent as I think this new strain is quite new. (p.s. I dont have the ability to get seeds off the net. THX.

Try buying dried pods from a craft store/department and harvest the seeds from those to grow if you can't get any off the net.

Also try mail order gardening catalogs, they often have wide varieties of poppies.

McCormick seeds should be just fine as long as they are not from Poland. Actually many years ago already Poland developed not one but three strains of poppy that produce very little in the way of morphine. Przemko which looks a lot like any other high morphine poppy the Michalko and the Miezko which look different.

Look for bulk seeds from India or turkey, would be your best bet... you can often find them at Asian grocery stores. But if all you can find are McCormick, you'll be just fine.

Cheers

McCormick seeds come from the Netherlands:grin:I've grown all the different kinds, and the Gourmet are by far the best, and the most expensive:grin:

THX everyone, you put my mind at ease. I was scared to ingest a potentially nasty chem.
just out of curiosity, is there a difference in appearance at all when it comes to przemko vs. the high potency strains?

Sorry I currently can't find any photos, but I have seen pics of them in the past and they look quite a bit like the McCormick poppies above. That being said, papaver somniferum comes in way too many colors and variations to list here and many of which are potent.

http://www.google.ee/images?um=1&hl=et&lr=&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-GB%3Aofficial&tbs=isch%3A1&sa=1&q=papaver+somniferum&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=&start=0#start=0&tbs=isch:1&imgsz=l&tbo=1

Check the link above.

I currently grow about 8 different varieties, but have seeds for another 7 or so. My beds are heavily planted with 2 varieties though, an Afghan and a Taz, but there are multiple varieties within these groups. The poppy world is a big one  Just plant them and enjoy their beauty. As I suggested above though, try your hand at whatever you can find... those Turkish and Indian bulk seed varieties will not disappoint.

Hello. I had 2 lbs of grocery store bulk seeds that I just threw in my front flower beds just to see what would happen. I was surprised that some sprouted. They've been growing for about 6 weeks now and they are only like 9 inches tall and they have tiny buds already opening. Are they supposed to be this little? I thought poppy plants were taller. I have pics. I just have to figure out how to put them on here. Sorry if I'm bringing up an old post. I didn't want to start a whole new topic when I found a relevant one here. I know some places frown against that. Thank you.
