Question about isopropilic alcohol

Hello, a quick question
I hear that the best alcohol to use in sterilization procedures is 70% iso alcohol.
The thing is that until now, the only kind of iso alcohol that I have managed to get is 95-99% isopropilic alcohol
Will this kind work? or do I have to get it to70%? and how?
thanks in advance for the time

You can use that. Or methylated spirits/denatured alcohol.

140 proof drinking liquor = 70%.

I could be wrong, maybe 70% is better. I just like to use high consentration alcohol because it evaporates very rapidly

70% alc evaporates slower, thus has more contact time to kill.

RR says that 70% is the best, because 99% evaporates too fast, thus not sterilizing for as long.
add 25% water to your 99% iso alcohol, drinking alcohol is way too expensive.
Edit: aaaand mycho.alchemist says so, too

depends on what you're sterilizing, it could be useful. When I sterilize my cake containers, I don't want residual moisture in there.

70% iso sterilizes better since it has more water content then say 99%. That water content tricks cells into opening up thus letting the alcohol go to work

You could do that even tho its a waste of alcohol since 99% costs alot more then 70%.
I would use distilled if I "were" to ever do that

I would get the 70% one if I could, but the thing is I've been asking around, and where I live it just isn't available. So one has to work around.

Yeah, best response so far has been about the fact that 70% "tricks" the cells... Basically at 70% there's enough moisture that most cells recognize it as water, allow it to permeate, then get dried up and die from the alcohol present. Higher alcohol percentage is less efficient because the cells recognize it as something that's just going to kill them...

ok, cells recognize it as something harmful and then repel alcohol? lol...i believe alcohol does what it should at 70 as much as at 97%...but like i said, i will take 70% into consideration and use it for a couple of weeks, if my contamination rate will increase im gonna blame yall!

What I've heard is that sterilization occurs due to osmotic pressure rupturing the cell walls and that this works best with iso at 70% plus 30% water. I doubt that ethanol (drinking alcohol) works as well or the same way.

thank you... $70 ethanol works just as well if not better than iso alc...
