Pasteurization for outdoors?
    #12588681 - 05/18/10 09:08 PM (14 years, 7 months ago)

Would it be okay to use a 30 gallon rubbermaid to mix up a bunch of coir, black kow, a little hydrated lime, and straw, then add near boiling water to and seal the rubbermaid, and then let is sit for 6-8 hours?

It would then be dried to field capacity and mixed with 20 quarts of spawn and placed in an outdoor bed.

With the amount of substrate and the amount of water involved, there really isn't any way the substrate wouldn't stay above 140 for more than hour (plus blankets help). I'm worried about the 6-8 hours where it falls to room temperature. Is there any chance of that causing a risk of contamination?

The alternative would be getting the pasteurized substrate out of the rubbermaid after 60-90 minutes, squeezed to field capacity and placed in another container to cool. That could introduce contaminants during the exposure to air for squeezing and transfer, and the substrate would have to cool (although it would cool faster without all of the water).

This is regarding outdoor cultivation, so sterile techniques aren't as important, and this discussion may be moot. It would be interesting to know a few more opinions on this situation.

You don't need to pasteurize if growing outdoors...nature takes care of it's own.

Do not pasteurize or otherwise heat treat bulk substrates for outdoor use.
RR

Just figured that out just before your post, but thanks. I read several posts that suggested it, and couldn't find an RR comment on it until one of the recommended posts from making this thread.

So next question. If no heat treatment is necessary or good, then only warm water should be used to soak the coir instead of near boiling?
