Cow Pies in Upstate NY
    #12587583 - 05/18/10 05:52 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

I have these guys all over my pasture.  I think (based on my very limited knowledge) that they are some kind of Panaeolus.  Am I right?  If so, are they worth collecting?

Habitat: Cow and horse dung.  Most growing directly from the cow pie, but some in the grass nearby.

Gills: Very dark brown.  They form a bowl with the stem at the center.

Stem: Gray to brown.  Semi-hollow, with a spongy matrix inside.

Cap: Brown to gray.  The largest ones are just under 1 inch in diameter.

Spore print color: Very black, looking like coal dust.

Bruising: Not really, but maybe turning a darker gray if you beat it up enough.

Location: Upstate New York.

No blue bruising = Panaeolus antillarum.

Blue bruising = Panaeolus cyanescens.

The second on in from the left in the to pic looks like Panaeolus papilionaceus. The others may or may not be the same. Maybe Panaeolus antillarum. (All inactive) P. cyanescens don't grow this far up. Look in the same places for Panaeolus cinctulus also known as Panaeolus subbalteatus. Post pics of what you find here. Good luck!

I will confess something that should be quite obvious, CC.  I love mushrooms, i.e. fungi.  I really do.  I am talking about a strong feeling, i.e. emotion, for them.  I think they are beautiful.  I even dream of them.
