Hi everybody , Ive heard that some poppy seed companies are using a new strain of poppy that produses vary minute amounts of morphine and are pointless to gorw. Ive bought miccormick, some from sprouts(in the bulk bins),and sadaf. A fellow member mentioned that he grew miccormicks every yeay with no problems, but the post wasnt too resent as I think this new strain is quite new. (p.s. I dont have the ability to get seeds off the net. THX.

McCormick seeds should be just fine as long as they are not from Poland. Actually many years ago already Poland developed not one but three strains of poppy that produce very little in the way of morphine. Przemko which looks a lot like any other high morphine poppy the Michalko and the Miezko which look different.

Look for bulk seeds from India or turkey, would be your best bet... you can often find them at Asian grocery stores. But if all you can find are McCormick, you'll be just fine.

Cheers

Sorry I currently can't find any photos, but I have seen pics of them in the past and they look quite a bit like the McCormick poppies above. That being said, papaver somniferum comes in way too many colors and variations to list here and many of which are potent.

http://www.google.ee/images?um=1&hl=et&lr=&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-GB%3Aofficial&tbs=isch%3A1&sa=1&q=papaver+somniferum&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=&start=0#start=0&tbs=isch:1&imgsz=l&tbo=1

Check the link above.

I currently grow about 8 different varieties, but have seeds for another 7 or so. My beds are heavily planted with 2 varieties though, an Afghan and a Taz, but there are multiple varieties within these groups. The poppy world is a big one  Just plant them and enjoy their beauty. As I suggested above though, try your hand at whatever you can find... those Turkish and Indian bulk seed varieties will not disappoint.
