Well the "mixture" certainly makes all the difference, but I'll take straight verm casing any day over standard pf cakes.

Casing layers add moisture and a protective layer vs. contaminates. Not nutrition. The increase in size of fruit is directly related to the moisture allowed during primordia formation, and fruiting. You'll notice your casing layers getting very dry after a flush.

A straight vermi casing will add moisture, as well as any casing layer. However there are other things to consider, like drainage, aeration, etc.. There is a good section in the FAQ about casing. I would suggest reading it, it's quite helpful.

i grew cakes (once) but i jumped straight to casings after i saw how small my fruits were... Now i have a verm casing going on its second flush. The fuits are much much larger. The only thing i would complain about is that my casing is in a 7 inch box ,so my fruits are all squished and stuff. But overall your fruits will be much larger and you will also have the potential to grow more shrooms on the larger surface area..... Get some birdseed and verm and you are really going to be happy. trust me

like raadt and myco holic said, the casing layer provides moisture and a protective layer against comtams. casings also allow much more surface area than cakes for the most part... just depends on how big a casing you do.
