I dont think this is normal
    #12583962 - 05/18/10 06:44 AM (14 years, 7 months ago)

Hello,

I had recently pick some shrooms I had growing and then put them in a dehydrator for 36 hours. I stores them in a magic vac bag with all air vacuumed out of it I open the bag today and broke open some stems they were still dry but found this in the middle are they all bad?

Should be fine, the color is probably bruising.

i will take some better pictures this afternoon. The only thing that worries me is that they gray looking material that i cant best describe is almost like dust that was built up and you can brush it out of the stem.

Sounds pretty normal for the inside of a stem.
Mushrooms looked good at harvest, yes? Dried quickly and thoroughly?

Hello,

Yes the mushrooms looked perfect when I harvested I harvested right when veil broke so they haven't been sitting long or anything and yeah they dried quickly and with a few of them I took off the dehydrator I pushed my fingers in the stems and it broke just like a cracker would.

Ok here is where i'm drawing a blank I want to hear just from you guys what you think should I vacuum seal these and store in a drawer or in the freezer should I not vacuum seal and use a different method I've used search but am wondering on your opinions since you've helped me all along the way. They will be cracker dry none of the shrooms i'm storing will be fresh.

I just dry them and store them in a mason jar at room temp and they last years. Its fine to vacuum seal them, I am against storing in the freezer, due to condensation from taking it in and out. Room temp is fine

yea thats fine some times the matter is sand color usually white but either way if they dried in a dehydrator then its extremely unlikely anything went bad. but in the future you could always cut your mushrooms in half lengthwise first.

ps. the color you dont want to see is black and if you see that color youll smell it too.

Just a tip, if you split the mushrooms long ways before drying they dry much, much faster.

I don't see anything wrong in any of the pictures, so you should be fine.

my mushies look just like that and then I find the wet spot....bacteria. The outside look a little bluer than they should. if you see an extra blue mushroom, squeeze it and brown gunk oozes out...wet spot

That is by no means a way to decipher wet spot, mushrooms can have no staining you know

well, you would certainly hope to catch it before then. Also thats what I call it, it could be something else, but the brown juice in the stem=bad. looks like this guy dried his brown juice

if its on the inside of an otherwise healthy looking mushroom its fine. like i said before some times they get a weird color.

black is bad, weird smell other then mushroom funk = bad too.

if your getting weird oozing stuff after they dry (i didnt quite understand) then thats because they weren't fully dry and rotted on the inside.

Next time try fan drying for 12-24 hours and then place in a desiccant chamber for another 12-24 hours.

I'll be starting my first ever bulk grow in the next 2-3 weeks and I am thinking of a few different ideas.I was thinking of a food dehydrator (one that has a temperature regulation as I have read anything more then 95° fahrenheit is not good),also I have been thinking of making a drying box similar to this one minus a carbon filter.I built a homemade one years ago for drying my home grown, long before I ever saw one advertised in MJ magazines and forums.

What I would do is use the dry box for fan drying and then take a sterelite tub and rig it to hold all the screens of fan dried mushrooms above a thick layer of desiccant to get them cracker dry all without the use of heat.

This has been proven to not be true.  You're advised against storing them long term at high temperatures but as far as drying goes it's fine.  I dehydrate mine @ 165f for 4-5 hours.

Other people actually boil, grill, or sauté theirs before eating.

Oh I have made pizza with shrooms I have grown...but for drying a nice slow dry (not too slow or they will rot) is best IMO...not saying it affects potency, but I am also kind of a perfectionist too.Besides, using fan dry and desiccant chamber will take just about as long as it would if you were to use a food dehydrator....and I can fit a lot more shrooms in a fan dry box and desiccant chamber then I ever could in one food dehydrator.

i would say that depends on the RH of your drying atmosphere. if you have a 30% rh then you wont get down to but maybe 15% moisture content in your boomers.

dehydrators are the best option because hot air can hold more moisture therefore you can get your fruits down to nearly 0% watercontent. plus the sixty you will spend on a decent dehydrator will be far cheaper than the amount of desiccant it would take to do a big enough tub for a large harvest.

and i dry mine at 115f so heat shouldnt be a problem dont go overboard though obviously

I slice/chop/split mine into thinner pieces for drying then dehydrate 4-5 hours @165f and they're cracker dry. Into a bag and in the freezer.
One of these days I'll buy a vacuum sealer kit but haven't gotten around to it.

They come out like potato chips minus the oil :-D
