Anno says in this post: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/4910893#4910893 the following:
Quote:
Dung contains more nitrogen than brown rice, yes.
Dry cow dung containing 10% of water has the following composition: (source, PDF)
Code:
Moisture Organic material N P2O3 K2O 0.10 0.860 0.023 0.012 0.006
0.023(2.3 %) Nitrogen is equivalent to 14.6 % protein (source) .
Brown rice contains 'only' 8 % protein.
Quote:
When dung is prepared for use as mushroom substrate though, much of the nitrogen gets washed out during the leeching and the subsequent pasteurization in hot water. It is difficult to give an exact number on how much this is, but the nitrogen content of dung could diminish considerably.
THUS, My question is, can horse poo get too aged, too grey, too... leeched? I assume so, however I am wondering what other peoples experiences are.
I ask because I have a bag full of hpoo that i got from a huge mound that was pretty grey. I just took the top 4 or so inches of the mound, since below that it was pretty brown. So, my hpoo is a bit grey and brown. seems very leeched, I just hope it works out well.
Anyways, can hpoo lose its nutrients if its weathered for too long? Has anyone had a problem with the hyperleeching of hpoo?
Thx

yes it can loose good nutrients if weathered improperly. This would be it getting too dry, or washed out of nutrients. If you make a compost pile and add some straw it will help hold in some of the nutrition. You would want to have your pile in a somewhat shady area so that it wont dry out. Some people put a tarp on the pile or a roof over it. There are many ways to improve a compost pile.

I have used 5 or 10 year old h/poo out of an old barn. It was dry all that time & crunchy. It still worked fine.
However, if you want to add some nutes. Make a compost tea.

It's toilet flush simple to do. Then, hydrate with h/poo with the tea BEFORE you pasturize it.
