sorry didn't meant sound like a dick, but that shit is probably full of preservatives and chemicals.
Here:
RR Said- Jello has been tried dozens of times over the years. You can find the results with a search. It isn't an agar substitute. The mycelium will feed on the gelatin, turning it back to liquid. It will also begin to rot at room temperature, leading to bacterial contamination. I'm not aware of a single success story. Sorry.

they sell agar at oriental supermarkets and in the oriental section of fancy grocery stores.

it's called agar agar.
there's lots of recipes. mine is one half stick of agar, 1 tablespoon corn syrup, 1 teaspoon of potato starch ..stirred into 1 cup of boiling water
substitute the sugar or starch with wutever u have available.

edit- I leave out the layer of tyvek and have no problems. My house is clean tho. I'm obsessive compulsive BAD.

Could you use that stuff in petri dishes? It would be handy to fill, seal, sterilize.

I dunno I don't have any petri dishes. I don't see why not. Seems like it would work I was thinking about adding a little verm and tryin to get some sterile pins. That would be cool eh? The jars have GE so it seems to me like it may work

yeah that would be kinda cool if u had a method of growing small pins to transfer to grain jars.

I hadn't seen this tek before. I bet I can get some good use from it. Thanks Grumpy for pointing it out to us!

I just ordered some malt extract from a brewer supply store (5 bucks) and picked up some agar-agar from the korean supermarket (2 bucks) and make my own. Works pretty good.
Malt Extract Agar (3%)(MEA)(General Microbiology)(FDA M93)
30 g Malt extract 20 g Agar 1 L Distilled water
Boil to dissolve ingredients. Avoid overheating, which causes softening of agar and darkening of medium color. Autoclave 15 min at 121°C. Dispense 20-25 ml into sterile 15 x 100 mm petri dishes. Final pH, 5.5 ± 0.2.
This medium is recommended as a general maintenance medium. [1]
