What Can We Do?
    #1258130 - 01/29/03 10:24 AM (13 years, 10 months ago)

My roommate and I are both getting increasingly angry with George Bush, the U.S. Government in general, and the lies, propoganda and war that the U.S. is supporting. We attend a small, state college and really want to start doing things around campus to protest these things that are angering us!

We have started making signs and such, but I was wondering what else we can do. My roommate wants to actually organize protests, but how should she go about doing this? Does anyone know exactly how we should do this sort of thing on a college campus without "getting in trouble?" And do you think it would be possible for us to somehow find speakers to come and speak at some sort of rally?

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Is anyone else here protesting the war or other government wrongdoings in their own way? If so, what are you doing? I sure hope that other people are angry and aghast at our goverment and this war right now, and that others are getting active as well!

Thanks again for any replies!

Well what exactly are you angry about, what is your stance.

First you should probably go to your school's office of student affairs and see what your school's policy is on protests.

To get guest speakers, you just have to figure out who you want to speak, get in contact with them, and meet their demands. Getting guest speakers is somewhat more difficult than you may think. Usually they require a speaker fee, and on top of that, it is usually customary that you fit the bill for the speaker's accomidation, travel, food, etc......

You could always start up a student organization. Again, you'd have to see what your school's policy is.

Good Luck, have fun, be safe, and don't look like just another dumb protestor, find a cause and push it.

Thanks! Not looking like "just another dumb protestor" is what we have in mind! We really want to do things and do them right. I guess we'll be getting in contact with the office of student affairs soon.

What do you think the best way of informing and getting people to participate in our protests should be? And how can we make sure that our protests don't look like "just another stupid protest?"

On that note, what is the best form of protest? How can we make sure that our protests make some sort of difference? What are some things we could do that would not necessarily be "legal" (I use that term loosely), but that would really get our point across and that we could hopefully do without getting caught?

Once again, thanks for any answers!

We really want to make this happen!

Oh, and you asked what my stance is. My stance is simply anit-war. War is unjustified justified murder, in my opinion. It is completely inhumane and not something that we, as humans, should participate in. In my mind, war is to be left to the lower members of the animal kingdom.

I don't know much except for the basics of what is going on in our country right now. We don't get TV and I don't have easy access to the internet or newspapers. I am definitely going to get all my facts straight, though, and find out exactly what's going on and exactly what I want to protest against.

Thanks again for any help,

-RebelSteve

If you live on north america, good luck getting your "facts" straight!!

You can protest to feel better, but nothing is done.  And the US is not "supporting" this war, they are the cause of it!!
Bullshit, iraq is a threat, which country has the most weapons of mass destruction?  Which has used an A-bomb? and which is known for war mongering?

We ARE slaves..
Good luck with your protest.

I find that pipe bombs get any message across very nicely...

Go to a Student Government meeting and tell them what you plan to do. Get a listing of all campus clubs and recruit them or find out how to start a club of your own at your school.

At my school all you needed was a staff advisor and follow the rules which were: Weekly meetings, follow roberts rules of order, have a chain of command and keep records.

Me and my best friend started a chapter of NORML at our college and it was fucking great... We got FULL use of campus facilities for free, Non-Profit status for purchases and renting spaces for concerts and such. We got to tap into the schools money to help with fund raisers and we got all the free printing we wanted for posters and flyers and such..

Start by introducing yourself to the Student Body President and the Staff Advisor of your schools governing board.

You can protest to feel better, but nothing is done.

I'm glad that African Americans and women and the hippies of the 60's did not share your negative attitude! We can each accomplish a lot, as long as we keep a positive attitude and work hard to accomplish what we want to do.

Do you suggest we just sit back and complain about things, but do nothing to try to change them? This is the attitude that a lot of people have, and it is the attitude that will lead us all to our own destruction. We need to stand up and do something for what we believe in! We need to fight what's not right!

For those who haven't seen it, here is an awesome poem from the anti-war website, www.notinourname.org:

The Pledge of Resistance

We believe that as people living
in the United States it is our
responsibility to resist the injustices
done by our government,
in our names

Not in our name
will you wage endless war
there can be no more deaths
no more transfusions
of blood for oil

Not in our name
will you invade countries
bomb civilians, kill more children
letting history take its course
over the graves of the nameless

Not in our name
will you erode the very freedoms
you have claimed to fight for

Not by our hands
will we supply weapons and funding
for the annihilation of families
on foreign soil

Not by our mouths
will we let fear silence us

Not by our hearts
will we allow whole peoples
or countries to be deemed evil

Not by our will
and Not in our name

We pledge resistance

We pledge alliance with those
who have come under attack
for voicing opposition to the war
or for their religion or ethnicity

We pledge to make common cause
with the people of the world
to bring about justice,
freedom and peace

Another world is possible
and we pledge to make it real.

Beautiful, eh? I think it's one of the best things I've read in a long time.
Okay, well, thanks again for anyone who gave me advice. If there's anything else about protesting that anyone here can add, it would (of course) be appreciated.

You can't do anything that will actually prevent this war.

And I guess this is what Democracy and Freedom is all about, right? pfff

Eff this country - I'm gettin up to Canada when I save up some funds.
