Encryption. Computer Safety

I guess this is cultivation related more than anything; it's not psych experience.
Anyway, it is safe for everyone to be smart, because some of you live where it's illegal to grow.
I know enough about computers to know that one of the best encryption programs is called TrueCrypt - at: www.TrueCrypt.org It is a free, open source program that works for both Windows and Linux.
I have both Windows XP and Linux Ubuntu that I can switch back and forth between. I also have a Z: drive that is encrypted and contains all my photos and documents related to this site which can be accessed with either operating system.
There are varying levels of security you can choose with this program, but once you get it set up, it is easy to use.
Just think of 'in case', and how many extra charges officials can place for something like seeing a record of grows.

Or just use Ubuntu or Fedora and they can encrypt the drive by default. This belongs in Security, not Mushroom Cultivation.

This thread was moved from Mushroom Cultivation.
Reason: YAY!!! Wrong Forum
security and safety is a pretty active forum, with the new layout I have trouble finding it and a couple others...

Im unhappy with my compter's performance with full disk encryption. I encrypted it with the default, which I believe is AES. Is there a different encryption scheme that doesnt impact performance as much? Even if it is less secure...

you have a couple of options with truecrypt.
what i do, is i made a file that i chose to be 2GB on my C: drive. when i'm on either windows or linux, i just mount that file as a partition (like a F: drive or Z: drive or whatever you choose), and you can have access to your encrypted 'folder'.
if you do it this way, you won't ever really be running any programs that are encrypted, so it won't slow your computer down.
another option with truecrypt is to actually create a new partition on your hard drive, choose the size, and only mount it when you want. the partition will be filled with empty data and encrypted, so officials won't even be able to prove that you have any files there. again, this is only encrypting files that you choose to be encrypted.
the installation of truecrypt will explain mostly everything

bah, I know all that. I use full disk encryption, I wonder what the performance/security ratio is like for the different algorithms. If I ever find out Ill post it.

right, but law enforcement must 1st contact the admins here, request my IP, then they must contact my provider to request account information associated with my IP. Now I have 2 questions, how can another forum member find out my IP, if they do find it out, what information can they obtain from it?

police need a warrant, and even if I, for example, were to get your IP, i could only pinpoint it to the certain CITY
for any more information, me, anyone else, and/or law enforcement, they would need to get the information out of your internet service provider.. that's where the warrant comes in

Make a sig with a link to a jpeg or gif or whatever that is on a server I control. Everytime you load a page with my sig, it will go get the picture. Then I just check the logs of the server to see what IP address requested it.
