shotgun terranium with holes or no for perlite
    #12578954 - 05/17/10 01:23 PM (14 years, 8 months ago)

I'm going to be using the perlite humidification method and I was going to use a shotgun terranium. i've been reading that if you use perlite there isn't suppose to be any holes? but before I read that there are supposed to be 6 or so holes in the lid (from the re video). I'm now confused, is it okay to have the holes?

You should have small 1/4 in holes drilled on all 6 sides.

Dunk n roll then fruit. Then to get a second flush dunk again.

Where on earth did you read that?
Did you watch RR's vids?
They go over how to make one very well.

puts lots of holes on all 6 sides. after fully colonized, let consolidate for a week, then dunk for 24 hours. rinse, roll in verm and put in chamber. light it 12/12 mist 3-4 times a day, and fan 5-6.

Crazy, must be way outdated.
Ya drill 1/4 inch holes on all 6 sides, about 3-4 inches apart
fill with 5-6 inches of moist perlite,
be sure to elevate the whole shebang so air can
circulate around all the sides and the bottom.

Elevating whatever you have in the shotgun up off
the perlite will help also, more surface area
of wet perlite = more humidity.

Good luck!

Build it just as RR shows you to in these links

http://www.shroomery.org/10254/PF-TEK-Update-The-Shotgun-Terrarium

BTW...a lot of the articles that can be found under "Mushroom Info" at the top of the page are really outdated and should either be deleted or updated.

my experiments with perlite have ended in a 50% or higher contamination rate in cakes.

But the ones that didn't get infected had fruits 4-8 inches tall! Still, considering this outcome, the contamination rate has ended this experiment for me.

Are you saying you blame perlite?

im not blaming perlite, i'm stating the results of my experiments with it =)

sterilizing it a pain, and using it without sterilization produces a 50%+ contamination rate...at least in my experience

I'd start looking for other shortcomings in your sterile culture technique.

semantics, pfffft!
flushes occur in sequence. 1st, 2nd, 3rd if your lucky and so on.
i could throw up a definition but i dont care that much. the meaning was clear, or you wouldnt have known how to 'fix' it.

There are no other shortcomings. I as soon as I removed perlite, contamination rate has dropped significantly. I will post my set up here tonight once I'm done writing it. Then you will see exactly what I do and the results I have.

I knew what you meant. Doesn't mean it was clear.

If your base tek is not the same as the subsequent tek it can't, by definition, be sequential. But yeah semantics.

How were you using the perlite?
