My PmP set-up and a few questions...

My first fruits began coming in my SCFC, but were producing very small fruits. I had caps breaking open on 1-2" shrooms and several that were not even 1". My other problem is that I have pins forming primarily toward the original bottoms of the cakes, and a few cakes with pins forming on the side aiming up and down. I'm currently just using my best judgment, I have 4 cakes upside down and 4 right side up.
These facts, in addition to the fact that I will be out of town for a few days this week, made me decide to set up a more automated FC. I chose the PmP. I originally used perlite, but it floated to the top, so I had to use a combination of perlite/lava rocks to get a 1" layer between the top of the water and my cakes.
I do have a few questions though.
Do I need to mist at all?
I know you CAN put the cakes directly on the lava rocks, but should I do that or are they fine on the jar lids?
perlite/lava rock combination, water level is about 1" under the top of the rocks.
 humidity is constant around 97%
I bought a $15 air pump from a pet store, and I have two 16" airstones under that mess, if I take the lid off all I hear constant air bubbles breaking through the surface!

Mist as needed. Dunno about the lids/lava but my guess is 'yes'.

If you don't mind getting perlite and rocks stuck to the bottom of your cakes/bottom fruits.
You want 3-5 air exchanges per hour and you need to make sure your cakes are not getting wet and staying wet. You may want to put the bubbles on a timer to give a little bit of a dry time.

I've had the bubbles on 24/7 with 12/12 light. My biggest concern is still by far where my pins are forming. The majority of the cakes have pins forming on the bottom so I have flipped them. One is on it's side, and a few I've decided to keep right side up regardless. Also several have pins aiming both up, down, and sideways. One of the upside down cakes has approximately 25 pins!
It's my first grow so I'm expecting to have to do some experimenting first time around.
Anyone else with a pMp have input on how ofter to have the bubbles on? In the tek I tried to follow there was no mention of ever turning the bubbles off...
