I think you would be okay. This is based off what one of the trusted cultivators, rogerrabbit, has to say about how a shotgun works.

According to him the air rises through the bottom then out the sides and the top. If this is true then theoretically your perlite and it's moisture content could act as a filter. However, that's assuming that the air does actually rise up through the bottom. I've never done any scientific tests myself to either confirm or deny this. So I can only speak to what I assume to be true.

You'll almost always get a first flush, even if the shotgun is in a dirty place. You might get problems getting a 2nd flush or you might have a problem with the perlite getting dirty and needing to be bleached between flushes. You should be able to pull it off just fine tho.

You are right tho that a monotub with polyfill might be better in such an environment. Especially if you run into a problem with fungus gnats.

Just make sure you incubate in a separate, sterile environment and you should be fine. Your cakes will be healthy enough by the time they're ready to fruit. If you want you can put the shotgun chamber on a table or raised surface to keep it away from the floor. Keep the room as clean and sterile as possible and spray a solution of water and lemongrass essential oil around the table (lots of smaller bugs are repelled by lemongrass). For the roaches, you can mix up a 1:1 solution of sugar and baking soda to scatter around (messes up their digestion and eventually kills them) or mix up some laurel leaves with diatomaceous earth and spread around your workspace. As long as your chamber is properly sealed and elevated the bugs shouldn't be an issue. Give it a go and see how things end up.

I'd set the SGFC up on legs and then put a line of boric acid powder around each leg and maybe put a line around the entire room and window ledges etc. to keep the bugs out.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boric_acid

Can buy it anywhere that sells pest control products.
