Shroom drying

My first flush of my first ever grow was picked last week and the supplier of my grow box advised me to dry the shrooms by leaving on paper in a warm dark place and they should be dry in 2 - 4 days. Ok cool, sounds easy enough. So I did as I was advised and the shrooms seem dry but feel like rubber. I was expecting them to be really dry, like 'cracker dry' as I wanted to powder them and cap them. Is it just a case of waiting longer because they have been drying a week now. Any suggestions?

That rubbery feel to them is left over moisture, obviously, and the longer they contain moisture the higher chance they start to rot. The method of just placing on paper and left to sit is, quite honestly, a piss poor method of drying. I don't know why they recommended that to you. I'd lay them out somewhere and put a fan on them ASAP.

I had an idea I wanted to try where I take 2 furnace filters roughly the size of my box fan and spread the fruits out in between them. Then strap them to the fan with bungee cords and let it go for a day or three till cracker dry. I saw Alton Brown make beef jerky this way on Good Eats. I don't know if this has been tried or mentioned here before. I think I will give it a go real soon.

Why not dry them on the oven at not too high temperature?

I have a little electric convector heater i was gonna turn down to low heat and set them on a rack above it on some garden fabric(lets air and moisture through) for a few hours. Do you have to cover them to keep them out of the light?

I used to use calcium chloride to extract the moisture, but thats too much work compared to my method now. I bought a small rack on wheels with drawers, the rack has no walls, i placed metallic netting on each drawer surface. I wouldn't recommend using paper because it absorbs moisture. then I put a fan next to this rack. it takes no more than 2 days for them to be "cracker dry"

i dont know how much you plan on growing or where your located but a dehydrator for 60 bucks or so from any home goods store like bed bath and beyond is a very wise investment. i can dry about 4 or five os at a time and it only takes about 10 hours on a low setting. saves time and energy cause to build a crazy contraption is gunna cost you 20-40 bucks why not go with a reliable and easy to use system for a little more.

Not sure about this recommendation. Seen some horror stories of people bunking their entire harvests by doing this. Damp rid (Kilrock moisture traps for us British folk) and a lunch box with a rack is less than £3 and does the job with no risk.

It won't hurt to leave them out in the light but as a safety thing I'd cover them up. Someone walked into my room when I had a half ounce drying on my desk and boy was that awkward.

light at least uv light such as direct sunlight is about the worst thing to expose either dry or wet mushrooms to. it degrades the actives very fast.
also i find that if you cut the whole mushroom in half lengthwise cap and all they will dry much faster.

Here's how I do it using a dehydrator and it takes about 4 - 5 hours before they're cracker dry.

I dried about a half ounce by simply laying them on a clean table and pointing an oscillating fan at them. Only took 2 days or so and they were completely dry.
But, I probably did not get ALL the moisture out. This didn't matter because they were consumed very soon after drying (and they were definitely not bunked! ). If you're planning on keeping them for any length of time, I would recommend a dehydrator so none of them are lost to mold and junk.

you have to get them dry first. damp rid which is desiccant with a brand name and prolly some shit you don't need, is used when you cant get them cracker dry with other methods or for longer term storage.
imagine trying to dry a pound or better or fresh mush with desiccant. it would take forever. though for a small amount its practical. anything over a few cakes and id get a dehydrator especially if you plan on growing more than once.
