What are peoples thoughts on using gel water beads with the perlite or as a substitute for perlite. You know the beads that expand in water then you put in a vase for flowers.

They're designed to hold water, while the porous surface of perlite is conducive to evaporating water, thus it helps raise humidity. I've heard of those being used in casing layers with varied success, but they're not a perlite substitute. RR

those beads are likely to suck moisture from its surroundings and store it, not releasing it

Thanks for the quick reply. My curiosity is always in overdrive. I'm sure I'll come up with more wacky ideas that will be more complicated and against the flow of the tried and true.

lol welcome to shroomery rob! best way to find out is to have a control and another with the beads and see which does better.
doesnt hurt to try, im sure there wont be much difference tho. the results will be inconclusive unless your using clones not multi-spore.

Do you have a lot of experience, if you don't mind me asking, or are you coming up w/ new ideas before successful grows?
The reason I'm asking, is because your ideas will change drastically once you have a few successful grows under your belt. You'll get a feel of what mushrooms need, what materials work and what don't - and then you can try new things from there.
Good luck man

First time. My buddy helped get me started so I get to ask him questions too. He is a beginner. Not sure what his name is on here. Thanks for the words of encouragement, I don't really have a camera or else I would keep you guys updated on my first time. I'll see if I can get a hold of one.
