Big Cakes - Part 4 * 1
    #12575654 - 05/16/10 09:09 PM (14 years, 8 months ago)

8 3-quart modified PF cakes done in spawn bags.
Each cake will be approximately 3 quarts which is roughly equal to 16 half pint PF cakes. So 8 cakes roughly equal to 128 half-pint cakes in total.

(math: 1/2 pint filled 3/4, leaving room for dry verm barrier and room to inoculate)

Big Cakes, - Round 4!

This is my 4th attempt at making large PF cakes. I feel I need to run it one more time before I feel comfortable writing up a tek for them.  Total yield over 2 flushes was 17.75 oz (503 grams -/+ a couple)

Here's what I'm using:

8 Large Presealable Autoclavable Gusseted Bulk Spawn Bag
Added my own self-healing silicone injection ports.

Each bag was filled with 3 quarts of modified PF mix.
Recipe:
3 quarts coarse vermiculite
1 quart coarse ground Wild Bird Seed
1 quart water
3 Tablespoons Gypsum
3 Tablespoons spent coffee grounds

Mix dry ingedients first; stir well; then add water.
Let sit for 2 minutes then stir well, let sit for 2 more minutes then carefully scoop into bag without making a giant mess ;-D

Seal the bags about 1 inch from the top using an impulse sealer.

Pressure cooking in my 75x sterilizer for 90 minutes @ 20-21 PSI.

March.27th:

Inoculated with 10-20cc of APE LC.

Day 13:  These were ready to shake on sunday but I was really busy and did not have time yet.  Will shake tomorrow though.

Day 14:
Shook the cakes

Day 15:

24 hours after shaking recovery has begun.

Day 16:

Colonizing very fast.  Bags are reading about +10f over ambient room temperature.

Day 17:

What appears to be full colonization and temps have begun to drop closer to room temperature.  Now begins the week long consolidate wait.

Day 24:

Birthed and being dunked overnight.
One cake had a fat little pin.

Day 25:

Into their new home.

12/12 light cycle using 2, 40 watt 6500k CFL's.  As you can see from the one picture, they're very bright.

15 minutes on every 2 hours with the ultrasonic.  Will monitor and adjust as necessary.

Day 27:

Pins are starting to show up.  Some minimal fuzzing near the bottom of the cakes which is a sign of high humidity/low fae.  It's minimal so I think everything is working according to plan for now.

Day 29:

Early pins plus lots and lots of knots all over the place.

Day 30:
Nice even pinset.  Notice the scattered early pins/clusters followed by tons and tons of knots everywhere.  Got a few closeups :-D

Day 31

Some nice fatties here.

Day 32:

Day 34:

Day 34: part 2
Harvested 7 out of the 8 cakes. One cake is running a bit behind.
6.75 oz dry (191 grams)

Day 36:

Harvested the 8th cake last night, 42 grams dry for a grand total of 233 grams dry on the first flush. Lots of mutants.

Day 39:

Day 41:
2nd flush is coming in.

Day 42:

Pins pins and more pins, see if you can spot the chode.

Day 43:
Almost time to harvest tub #1. Tub #2 is a day or two behind.  I didn't dunk them all at the same time after the first flush, so they're on a staggered schedule now.

Day 44:
5 oz from the first batch and 3.75 oz from the 2nd.Still one cake left to harvest. Harvested 7 cakes today.
Very very few mutant this time. I was wondering if it was genetics or environment.  Seeing as nothing changed in the environment then it was probably just the usual PE genetics at work.  Lots of big, thick healthy penises here.

1 oz from the 8th cake bringing the grand total to 9.75 oz from the 2nd flush for a total of 17.75 oz (~503 grams) total from both flushes.

Harvested 3 cakes out of the #2 tub.

Harvested the 8th cake, about 30 grams dry.

Day 47: The End

Several spots of the green started to show so I tossed all the cakes rather then try to nit pick them.  And so ends Big Cake Part 4

:congrats:

Any ideas why so much sub can colonize so quickly? Strain/Sub/Conditions?

So yield/hassle, whaddaya think? Are 3-qt better than 1 qt?
Way better space usage than 100+ cakes... but I wonder how many cakes you'd need to get 500g?

Fascinating stuff here.

Round 4 looks awesome. :awesomenod: And I dig the setup you got with those tubs. I had something just like that before moving my ultrasonic to the green house. Works pretty nice eh and of course yours looks a lot better than mine ever did.

Albino Penis Envy, Modified PF mix(see original post for details), incubated and fruited at 70f -/+ 2f

It comes down to a question of space efficiency more then anything.  I can fruit 4 cakes at a time in those 66 quart shotguns whether they're 1 quart or 6 quarts.  I'm going to do a large batch of 6 quart size next.  Plus it's a better use of the spawn bag.

Average yield is 3-7 grams per cake, so 70-166.
I did 8 cakes in 2 tubs and an automatic mister. Only real work I did once they were in there was refill the humidifier once.
    Harvested/drying/dunking was the longest part.

I didn't get any prints and I tried extracting some spores from dried caps I was unsuccessful.
    Here's your best bet.
