If your gonna be messing around with rye mixtures you might as well just use the rye as spawn and use hpoo/verm or coir/verm as your substrate. You'll have much more success that way.

yes 50% is common, but I've gota agree with the above poster, why not just branch out? I think coir has better moisture retention than verm anyway IME. I did crude measurements of it and found coir to take more water.

Rye berries have poor moisture retention and I can see why you just want to add verm but, why not go just a little farther? Like doing a 45% verm 45% coir 10% nitrogen booster (like: spent coffee grounds, manure, worm castings) substrate on a 1:2 ratio instead. I know that people complain that shaking jars at 50% is not good for them so I really am skeptical about higher spawn ratios like 1:1. Frankly I wouldn't go higher than 1:2 and I usually use a 1:4-5 which is a relatively normal spawn ratio.

Hypothetically since PF cakes are 2 thirds verm and one third grain you should be able to do a spawn ratio as high as 1:2 with verm. However for some reason which I never bothered to inquire into I once saw RR recommend 50% as a top end of adding verm to a substrate. I don't know if the advice he was giving was applicable to straight grain/verm setups though.
