Concern about millet that may be a little dry...
    #12570605 - 05/16/10 12:07 AM (14 years, 8 months ago)

I made a buuunch of quart sized jars full of millet, and all was good, only thing is i used a new kinda filter disk.... its a great filter, its kinda like tyvek and papery.... so i just slapped that ontop of the jar, and twisted a ring over it to hold it in place... I inoc'd my millet like almost TWO weeks ago and so far all i got is a couple little spots of white.... nothing big at all...and it looks like the millet is SUPER dry....

Im thinking that the huge filter top that i used let in TOO much FAE... and now it seemed to dryout on me... what should i do?!?!?!

will it still grow and colonize even tho the millet MAY be super dry? or is there anyway to fix this!?!?!?

any help would be appreciated... thanks!

Try injecting some sterile water?

I would try to inject a SMALL amount a few centimeters from the growth spots.  Mycelium likes dry substrates because it has to seek out the water and thus grows nice and strong!  However, if it is TOO dry then it's just too thirsty to grow at all :frown:  Also, and this seems more unlikely since you've seen SO little growth, it may be that your interior is simply wetter and colonizing MUCH faster.

This is one of the sundry reasons that you cap jars with tinfoil.  Next time, trim your filter disk so it ends just below the brim of the jar and make sure the tinfoil goes past it by about half an inch.  Then, after innoculating, put the tinfoil back on and smooth it over the glass with the webbing between your thumb and finger to make a nice tight seal.

Ya don't do that, the idea of the tinfoil is not just to prevent excess water from getting in during P/C but also to keep the jar a sterile, sealed, and humidity controlled environment during incubation.

Inject some water, then swab some more tinfoil with alcohol and recap with tinfoil.  I also like to tape the tinfoil down sometimes after inoculation though it's not strictly necessary.

Sorry, but I beg to differ.

You need some sort of Gas Exchange during colonization. Hence why people that do grains use tyvek, polyfill, etc.

The only role foil plays is to keep excess water from getting into it during the PC process.

OP, I suppose you could try the sterile water technique, but when I ran into either too wet/too dry conditions during the grain spawn learning curve, I just started over again. If growth is minimal, meh...give it another go I say. Perhaps only drill a 1/4" hole in your metal lid, then putting the filter on over top of that. This way it's not too the point of drying out your grains prematurely during colonization. (If that is the case...)

yeahh, i just used the metal ring... and put that OVER my whole filter... lol, no contams! buuuuut its just a huge surface area and im guessing that that is why they are all dried out :\

Don't try to inject more water or disturb the jars anymore than you have to. You're just increasing the chances for contamination and probably risk totally screwing up the water content. Being on the dry side is much better than being too wet.

The grain is supposed to look dry after PC and inoculation. All the necessary moisture should be inside the grain. How long did you simmer/soak the millet?

Also, 2 weeks isn't all that long. In fact, just starting to see even the most minute growth after 7-9 day is relatively normal. Just have some patience and let 'em do their thing.

The tinfoil is to be removed after the PC. Keeping it on the jars restricts GE and serves no purpose in keeping the jars sterile and sealed.

basically soaked for a little over 24 hours... then i PCed the millet, and waited (didnt mean to...got caught up) about a day and a half before inoc.-ing

but yeah... i decided out of the 20 quarts i have... i shook up two... labeled them as shaken, and injected 10CC of water into another one... and labeled that one as well... so now im gonna see if i see a change with a couple of my controls... if a good change, ill do it to the rest...otherwise yeah. im just gonna have to wait it out i guess...

thanks!

IMO if you soaked 24 hours it will do just fine...Too wet seems to be more tragic than too dry (again IMO).
