my 1/2 pint jars are like 20% colonized and they are forming mushrooms in the jars.
is that because they are to dry?
i used 2 cups verm, 1 cup brf, and 1 cup water and about a quarter cup of gypsum. my closet lights on and off all day were they are colonizing and and my light is a 6500k light.
shea whats happening?

That's about ten times too much. Use 1 tablespoon of gypsum for the recipe you used.
If it's pinning with most of the substrate uncolonized, then those uncolonized parts are contaminated. I'd bury the cake into a manure bed outdoors. RR

If you had said 75% colonized I would say it was because of the light and too much fae. Mushrooms need light to pin, but mycelium grows fine in the dark. Light is a trigger for fruiting, therefor if you colonize in the light, you are killing one of your fruiting triggers. You should read up on pinning strategies. Are you sure they are mushrooms? I wouldn't eat them.

You're parroting old and outdated information that has long since been proved false, books written thirty years ago and considered to be the 'bible' to the contrary.. Light actually speeds up colonization and fruiting if the mycelium is exposed to normal ambient day/night conditions from day one.
Mushrooms are more closely related to humans than to plants. How would you like to be locked in a dark cave your whole childhood, and then all of a sudden as an adult, thrust out into the bright sun and told to run a marathon?
Light is a secondary pinning trigger that comes into play at full colonization, when coupled with an increase in fresh air. However, mushroom mycelium uses light to convert sugars in the substrate to ATP within the cells from day one. There is NO reason to colonize in darkness and lots of reasons not to. RR

You're dead on sir, most of my info came straight out of TMC. Thanks for the heads up, apparently I need to do a little more reading. Does anybody know of a place I can find a good pdf. for download? Of course not TMC PMOW But something recent with good visual examples?

This shit works too. I bury all my failed project outside and I get rewarded about 80% of the time

Does this mean that if I get a contaminated jar I could go bury it in the horse poo behind the stabels and maybe get somthing out of it?

The mushrooms you do have are fine to eat, as long as there isn't any mold actually growing on the fruits themselves.

I wouldn't eat the pins/fruits right out of the jars, especially if there might be contaminates. Do what RR suggested and bury your cakes, pins and all. Then you can pick them after a few days once it's clear that the mycelium has overtaken any serious contamination problems, and given how much gypsum you put in your substrate they'll probably get pretty darn big if you let them grow outside for a few days. I'd be interested to see exactly how big they get if you're getting pins @ 20% colonization...
