Bottom pinning - flip *PIC* - UPDATED
    #12571656 - 05/16/10 05:45 AM (14 years, 8 months ago)

I dunked, rolled, and put my cakes in the fruiting chamber about a week ago and have been waiting (im)patiently for pinning. Finally got a few last night, all from the bottom. I noticed today they weren't coming from the sides, but from underneath, so I peaked...and almost shit myself.

My cakes had started turning blue, I determined it was due to low humidity and taped up a bunch of holes and misted the shit out of 'em (this was last night). Hopefully I start getting better humidity, and more even pinning.

This pic is after I flipped them over.

Couple of questions:

1) Should I have flipped them over, or not?

2) Is there anything wrong with "misting the shit out of 'em"?

*update*

Glad I turned em back over. It would have been a shame if they all aborted.

Here they are less than 24 hours later. B+ btw.

1. If they were growing why flip them over? They will make there way up.

2. No, but make sure that water evaps or you might get a mold

My theory was that, if they're only growing on the bottom, now they'll grow on the "new" bottom as well. Just a thought.

Can any harm come from flipping them?

This is my first grow, mainly a learning experience. I may not know much yet, but I've learned a shitload.

Working towards a PC/grains.

No mushrooms grow towards light. So just have that light overhead and you should be good  happy growing

You should not have flipped the cakes over.  If they pinned on the bottom, that was where they were happy forming.  Flipping a cake with primordia frequently causes them to all abort.

You should not have taped ANY of the holes shut if you built the terrarium per the tek.  Fresh air exchange is the number one pinning trigger, so the fact fruits formed proves the terrarium was functioning properly.

Your cakes blued from drying out, which is what they're supposed to do.  Loss of moisture is a major pinning trigger.  You're supposed to be misting daily to replace that lost moisture.  If the cakes got too dry from insufficient misting, simply pile some verm on top of the cake and soak it well.  It will gradually enter the cake.

Ok, thanks. I always look forward to your advice. So, should I flip em back over, since it's only been a couple of hours?

Done! lol. The only reason I was worried about the holes/humidity, is that I have to leave my fc unattended for 12 hours a day while at work. By the time I get home, the hygrometer has dropped to below 90.

I guess that's normal - good? Just mist/fan when I get home, and periodically while I'm home and all is well?

Fresh air is far more important than saturation humidity.  Mist before work and again when you get home.  The shotgun terrarium will take care of itself while you're gone.

I guess I've been depending too much on misting. I've been fearful of having my cakes dry out and produce sub-par fruits. I'll pile some verm on em, as per your recommendation, and quit worrying so much. Meanwhile I'll focus more on plenty of fae.

The humidity drop is actually beneficial, helps with evaporation, and in turn, pinning.

I suspect that the excessive bottom pinning is because you're misting so heavily and those tins retain a pool of water in the bottom. All that extra moisture down there is encouraging bottom pinning.

It's not a major problem, but it might tip your cakes over at some point.
