Small fruits, help needed (pic included)
    #12567835 - 05/15/10 03:30 PM (14 years, 8 months ago)

I placed 8 PF Tek Cakes into my SGFC about 4 days ago.  Prior to placing them in the FC there were pins forming inside the jar in 2-3 jars.  I dunked and rolled and placed 8 cakes into the FC.  The cakes that had growth starting inside the jar have continued to grow, but seem to be on pace to produce small fruits.  The fruit in the picture appears to be about to tear away from the stem and is only about 1.5". Is this because the pins formed inside the jar?

I was having a problem with perlite getting on my aluminum foil so I transferred the cakes onto more sturdy jar lids.  Upon doing so I noticed pins forming on another cake on the bottom of my cakes.  I originally placed the cakes in the FC the same direction they colonized (dry verm side up).  I flipped the cake with new pins forming so the pins are at the top, should I do this with the remaining cakes?

Please help/advise...

PS:  I've been misting 3-4 times per day and fanning 5, sometimes 6 times per day and RH has remained between 90-99% usuall

It's happening because they started in the jars and then you rolled them in verm. The roll usually damages pins but it's not that big of a deal. Just provide plenty of fae and your next ones will be much bigger.

Ok, that is somewhat of a relief.

To clarify once the veil break, should I pick all the fruits on that particular cake within a day or two and re-dunk only?

Also, what about the orientation of the cakes?  Should I go with the dry verm side up or the concave bottom side up?  I noticed that the pins on any of my cakes all seem to form more toward the original bottoms of the cakes....

Well, I usually pick them a day or two after the veil breaks but it's all preference (for photography purposes, I like it when they start turning upward). And if you just birthed them more pins should be coming soon. It can take up to 2 weeks for pins to form, so just keep a high rh and lots of fae and you will get a nice amount of pins. :awesomenod:

Should I re-dunk after I pick the tiny fruits?  Or just pick them and more pins will form on their own?

Your cakes look pretty hydrated. They shouldn't be dry, so I would say wait for more pins and see how hydrated the cakes are after you pick them.

Thats the exact opposite of what most people find. Most pin first on the top, closest to the inoculation holes ad then on the sides. I'm not the foremost expert, but it seems to point to borderline low humidity. It's most humid near the perlite in your sg. Usually when you have early pinning in the jar, that is the biggest mushroom you are gonna get. You may have damaged it with the roll and partially broke the mycelium. Perhaps you should look into a $5 aquarium air pump and a pop bottle. No more fanning and no more humodity wotties

Link to a tek?  I have a cool mist humidifier I was thinking about hooking up, I understand how it replaces misting but not how it would create FAE.

This is a really nice way to do it with a pump... but if you build a proper fc (with holes on all sides and at least 4-5 inches of perlite, while being elevated off of the ground) and fan and mist correctly then you should have no problems with humidity or fae. Plus, your cakes have only been in there for 4 days, give them time.

Also, maybe I should word something a little better.  Most of my pins are on the sides, but close to the bottom of the cakes...

There are a few however actually on the bottom.  Even the cakes that are producing these small fruits have mini shrooms at the bottom...

Pretty simple an airpump outside the terrerium, a little hole for the air line going into a bottle of water inside. The air flows through the water, humidifying it and then out of the bottle, into the chamber. As the air flows in, air has to flow out. The holes in the bottom area of the terrarium work good because co2 is heavier than air and sinks and flows right out the holes ala FAE as you can see mine has 3 bottles like a triple bubbler hookah. I never spray and never fan
