Kinda low on funds right now, was wondering if you could fill a soda can with verm/brf (actually using rice bran per RR), a dry verm layer, then foil over top, steam 'em, foil removed and let it colonize. Other than the trouble of not knowing when fully colonized, would there be any problem with this?

Honestly that sounds like an adventure destined for failure. You could try just for shits and giggles if you were so inclined, but don't let it get you down if it fails.

Sure. Cut them down to 8 oz though. Or drinking glasses. PITA IMO, however.
Or get a free/cheap pc and do grain in jam jars.

How would you know if it was contaminated?
And "other than not know when it is fully colonized" seems like a big problem to me, when would you birth?
A dozen jars cost like $6... $6
I am sorry.. but if you can't afford $6 how do you live? Skip lunch tomorrow and use the money to buy a dozen jars

I'd birth on day 21 if lc, 28 if spores.

Why? Comments like that are unwanted if they don't explain the reason..
@ Doc. I was thinking along those lines, to plan on birthign them on a certain day
Also, if they're contamed I lose the can, *shrug*
And where do you get a dozen jars for $6? They're 10-12 here and I was thinking of doing a good number of pop cans

sorry. Didn't think I needed to explain because the reasons are so obvious.
Firstly, your substrate is going to be contained in an UNCOVERED CONTAINER which will dry it out before the mycellium even has a chance. Yeah I know normal brf jars have holes in them but 4 tiny holes is much different than no top at all.
Secondly, even if they don't dry out too soon anyone with even minimal experience knows that mycellium METABOLITES CAN EAT THROUGH ALUMINUM.
Thirdly, even if you decided to keep them covered during colonization finding a way to cover them to hold moisture and still allow for proper gas exchange is going to be difficult given that aluminum cans are not that rigid. They bend, crease, and warp too easy even with the most delicate care sometimes.
I seriously think the idea is destined for failure.

I don't think it's destined for failure. It's just impractical. Yes, mycelium can eat through aluminum, but you can still grow in it. You can grow in damn near anything. It just comes down to whether it is even worth your time and effort. Most people would rather just use something easier like clear jars, bags, or tupperware.

My problem with the contamination is that if you are plopping them out to dunk, everything is going great then plop a big green cake splooging nasty spores everywhere.
I have a "Grocery outlet store" near me that basically sells surplus, expired, and damaged goods. Everything tends to be around %50 off. The jars they have are the tall 8oz widemouth jars $6. But even still 10 bucks isn't that bad either.

You're right you can grow in damn near anything but there is more harm than good when you have a colonizing can of substrate with holes all over it letting in fresh air and contams all day long.

since your not completely out of funds, just low on funds, take those aluminum cans to a recycling center then add that money to your existing money. Then stop by the goodwill or salvation army on your way home and buy some used jars from them. I always find decent used jars at those places for cheap.

you can use anything clear that can be pc'd, drinking glasses, rubbermaid containers, bags, etc.
