thinking about adding straw to sub, will pasteurization be the same?
    #12567251 - 05/15/10 12:49 PM (14 years, 8 months ago)

Basically all I do now is use coir/verm/spent coffee grounds. The way I pasteurize is loading 4 quart jars full of sub at field capacity, cover with aluminum foil, then put it in the pc with no lid and water 3/4 of the way up the jars. I then put a meat thermometer inside one jar closest to the middle of the jar as possible and heat the water until that jar reaches 160-180 for an hour. I let them cool down and use them a day later.

What my question is, would it be good to go get some straw and shred it up really well and add it to my sub? Worth the benefits? Will my pasteurization method be okay? ( not sure why it would change but just wondering). Main reason why I don't wanna change my method is because it's really easy lol but if I have to I will

Is there a noticeable benefit to adding straw or would it be a waste of time?

all im sayin is you will notice slightly faster colonization times
your yield depends on numerous things and the diversity of your spawn might not need to be changed at all.

So I won't notice a difference in yield by adding straw? My trays already colonize in a week and that's fine for me I don't need to speed up colonization.

That method of pasteurizing coffee, coir, manure, compost, etc., in jars is sound, but I'd lower the temp a bit.  Try to keep it under 160F for best results.

Straw is easier to pasteurize right in the water.  Just drop the shredded straw into a pot of water and heat it to within 140F to 160F for sixty to ninety minutes.

Is it worth it to add to my sub if I won't notice a difference in yield, just colonization times?
