Silicone sealant turned yellow after PC.?
    #12565319 - 05/15/10 12:29 AM (14 years, 8 months ago)

Why did this happen?

Could it be the nutrient solution leaking out?
If so, is there possibility of contamination?

I would probably say it is due to being exposed to light or just from being in the PC.  Heat and light will make some grades of silicone turn yellow.  But honestly I wouldn't worry about it.  Contams shouldn't be a problem from the silicone changing color.

Ick, I wouldn't be telling someone that. That might be waterproof, but I don't know about the temperature aspect of that silicone. I've looked at that kind as well, but it's the heat resistant aspect of the automobile silicone your looking for.

I'd get a trusted answer first. Don't listen to anybody but a TC.

I'm no noob guy... lol Waterproof has nothing to do with it. High temperatures and high light exposure can yellow silicone.  It's common sense!

"Silicone products very rarely yellow. However there are situations in which yellowing may occur, such as, use of silicones around other adhesives, use of harsh chemical or consistent exposure to hard/hot water. Silicone sealant can yellow when used outdoors or in areas of high UV exposures."

I understand you may be very versed in what you do, but if this were the case why is RTV Hi-temperature silicone recommended in every SH injection port I see or check the teks out on?

All I know is every other thread I see in the Cultivation forum goes like this:

QUESTION
ANSWER
DIFFERENT ANSWER
ARGUE
TC COMES AND CLEARS IT UP

And I really hope your right. I don't want to pay $5 to make some lids if I can spend $1. I'm freaking stingy.

I really don't care about the color change (even though I prefer white). I just want to make sure that contamination won't be a problem.

If you want the most bang for your buck, go with the RTV red high temp gasket sealeant.

Why is it the most bang for the buck? It costs 5.95 online.
I bought this for 3.45. If it works, then it is the most bang for the buck, as the quantity seems to be the same. Also, I don't need it to go above 400 degrees, just around 250.

Also, I am not looking for the most bang for the buck. I already used this and dont want to waste 1-2 weeks seeing if I get contamination problems. I just want at least a weak reassurance that I will have success.

I generally use plain old 100% clear silicone and haven't noticed any yellowing like that.  My sterilizer goes up to about 250f. Regular silicone is fine up to about 400f and the RTV stuff goes up to 650f.  Since my sterilizer tops out at 250 it doesn't make much difference to me.

That looks like GE bathroom silicone caulk. It's probably due to the mold resistance chemicals they add because it's for bathrooms.  As long as it does not appear damaged (cracking, falling off, etc.) it should be fine.

If you're concerned, I'd recommend this stuff - sold in hardware stores with the glue/tape.

Petstores sell it and it's available online too.

If you need alot, look for dap 100% silicone in caulk tubes, it's significantly cheaper by the oz.

Wow, I think Songiform just killed it. He is a TC and he uses regular old 100% silicon. Unfortunately the kind you used is not!!! Anyways, I was just searching for high temp RTV silicon all day and the first thing I found is exactly what Spongiform mentioned and I passed it up to search for the the high temp shit, only to find it is an automotive thing and was readily available at any autoparts store. I even bought a tube of that GE bullshit. Maybe I will re-caulk my bathroom!!!

While I don't doubt that it's more durable, I have aquariums that are older then I am lying around with the original silicone sealants in tact and functioning.  I think our injection ports will wear out from needle use long before they wear out from old age.

I use:

for ports in jars.  They cost a bit more (bout 12 cents a piece) they look nice and once they start to wear out you can patch them with a dap of silicone. They don't work so hot on spawn bags though.
