Thermos-and-Funnel Emergency Humidification Tek
    #12565210 - 05/14/10 11:55 PM (14 years, 8 months ago)

Until today, my shotgun FC was too dry. I'm confident this was the case despite not having a hygrometer because 1) The cakes always looked very dry despite frequent misting, 2) I have about a trillion holes in the sides, top, and bottom, and 3) I only had an inch or two of perlite.

Not wanting to buy more of the crummy Miracle Gro perlite while waiting for my Fox Farm Big 'n' Chunky to arrive, and not wanting to compromise FAE by taping up holes, I decided to try an experiment. I filled a large Thermos with boiling water, placed the narrow end of a plastic funnel inside, and placed the Thermos on a stack of magazines beneath the chamber. (My FC has been supported at the edges by two chairs so air can circulate freely underneath.) I continued adding magazines to the stack until the funnel's wide end pressed firmly against the floor of the chamber. It was easy to get the funnel to press squarely, leaving no gaps, because the funnel and Thermos together acted as a ball-and-socket joint, allowing automatic conformation to the proper angle. With the FC's weight slightly supported by the apparatus, I could be sure both seals--between chamber and funnel, and between funnel and Thermos--were quite good.

I reached inside the chamber and made a clearing in the perlite above the funnel. After clearing the holes of the perlite dust that had been clogging them--that's been a problem with Miracle Gro from the beginning--I saw steam begin to waft up through them. Realizing I could now deepen the perlite layer everywhere else, I removed the cakes and tin foil, leveled the perlite, and put the cakes back inside, making sure to keep them well away from the warm spring.

Four hours later I returned to check on things. There was no longer visible steam coming through the holes, but when I removed the Thermos and took out the funnel, I did see steam. I tried putting a finger inside, and found the water still too hot to stand for more than a second.

Another four hours later, when I came home for the night, I could still just barely make out some steam when I removed the Thermos and checked it. Best of all, I saw more new pins, and more growth in the old ones, than I've yet seen in a single day. Hooray for ghetto ingenuity.

I've already taken some, but I'm leery of posting them. I'll need to do some reading in the security forum first.

Make sure there's nothing identifiable, like say your ID with a map to your house in the background and you're good to go.

The Shroomery automatically gets rid of any image data as soon as you upload it.
