New Project for the Mushies
    #12565088 - 05/14/10 11:28 PM (14 years, 8 months ago)

Hey everyone,

I just designed a new type of fruiting chamber that is, so far, working out great. I am also learning a lot from it as well. What I did was quite simple and nothing that unique. But I am using tried and true ideas gathered from the Shroomery and other sources. I have been heavily researching mycology now for over 2 years. I have had good and a lot of bad results throughout my research. However, I have finally learned enough to become dangerous...lol.

Anyway, my new setup consists of a huge plastic tub, an air pump capable of pumping 30 - 60 gallons of air per hr., air bubblers, and a humidifier. The bubblers help with FAE and relative humidity. The ultra sonic humidifier helps with temp control, misting, humidity, and FAE. Here is the setup:

As you can see, the cakes are not lacking for moisture at all.

These are some fruiting mushies living in the new box.

All of these trays were done in rye grain and no casing what so ever. I know that some out there think casing is a better way to go. However, I have found that if you do not case you can easily gather the grain and use it for additional trips in the mind. This means no waste what so ever

Anyway, just thought I would share, and, as always any input is appreciated.

Looks cool, but just so you know I had that same ultra sonic and it took a shit on me after 3 weeks of use.

Edit: come to think of it I did buy it used so who knows...  I prefer cool mist tho.

I have had this one for a couple of months now and it has been ok. However, the place I got it from has a 90 day return policy

So guess what happens next month...lol

Nice project.  I'm a fan of this sort of thing, despite some of their drawbacks.

I don't believe a casing would be necessary due to the ultrasonic being perfectly capable of providing the necessary humidity but grains alone are not very good at holding enough moisture for large flushes so you might see better yields by mixing the rye with vermiculite.  If it were me I'd just do some of each and see exactly what the difference is and go from there.

Do you have the ultrasonic on a timer and if so what sort of cycle?

Mine runs 15 minutes on about every 2 hours, 10 times a day.

I run the ultrasonic on a timer set to run 15 minutes 8 times a day.

I have the same ultrasonic in my green house  I have heard of them crappin out but that's usually when people hook them up via hose and the static pressure builds up, ruining the impeller. I have mine inside of my green house blowing towards my coolmist, but I would be careful when hooking it up to a hose.

Ultra sonics dont have impellers, the cool mists do.
You may be thinking of the metal diaphragm.
I think that is what went out on mine.
I still have the unit in hopes its fixable,
but once I started running the cool mist inside the GH,
everything worked perfectly with just the one.

But ya I had the same setup!
With the ultra sonic blowing at the cool mist, worked great also!

You're right. I meant the diaphragm... which can get busted by the static pressure also. Both can happen, that's why inside is a good idea.

I use pretty large tubing so hopefully there won't be enough back pressure to ruin it quickly.

Yeah, I've taken a look at your setup. I had about the same size tube running from mine to some tubs before I put it in the green house, it seemed to work pretty well. I guess as long as the connection isn't too long and the hose is wide enough that the static pressure won't be enough to ruin it. I might be wrong but I'm pretty sure the diaphragm can withstand more static pressure than the impeller types.
