Is This Safe?
    #12564257 - 05/14/10 08:20 PM (14 years, 8 months ago)

I currently have 4 cakes fruiting in a SG style terrarium with more to come. I am quite limited when it comes space and thus I have been considering placing the light directly in the FC. I'm using a 6000K LED bulb which emits little to no heat and is very bright. My only concern is the idea of mixing high humidity with electricity so I have come up with what I think would be a safer alternative... putting the bulb halfway into the FC... so that the socket is outside the FC and the bulb is protecting the LED lights from the humidity. Here is a picture to help you understand...

What are your thoughts?

Just hang it above your FC, assuming it has a clear lid.  If you don't have enough room for that, you don't even have enough room for a SG FC.  You need air circulation.

I'd recommend next the FC. The bulbs will get hot and I'm betting if you accidentally misted them they could shatter.

If it's LED, it won't get hot and won't shatter. Then again electronics and 99% humidity don't get along very well, ask anyone who started out with a digital hygrometer.

I say keep it outside the tank, assuming you have a clear tank.

My digital hygrometer works great, but it was expensive and designed to work with greenhouses :/

I'd still recommend putting the light outside the chamber.  Add a window if necessary.

Of course, Spongiform has to have the kind with the external sensor, which validates my point since it is outside the FC.

You can make your own external sensor. I don't know if it would be any more accurate though. Never tried it.

Do you have a link or a brand name and model#?

I couldn't quite make it out in the pics.

Just curious, It's nice to see what works for people and saves money and time.

I did the 'external sensor' mod on a cheap digital hygrometer.  Worked like a champ.

back on topic ... I've mounted drop lights onto plexi windows with little 'stand-offs' .. also works well.

what little heat there is .. is outside the chamber ... and the light is directed right onto the substrate surface.

I agree with the people saying next to the FC.  I have my light next to mines.  Actually above it 4 inches.  The amount of light needed should be the same as if you needed a light to read.  The light is only there to signal the mycelium to produce fruits.

Bright lighting will produce better results then low lighting.

I use this one and they make a whole line of different models.

To continue on discussing lighting ....

I do monotubs outside, under a high deck with diffused natural light during the day.

If I want to really get things going, I'll put the pre-pinning monotub in the direct sunlight for about 10 minutes .... tub top off ...

then back under the deck ...

that intense natural light combined with massive FAE .. kicks them off.
