Letting endospores germinate...
    #1256401 - 01/28/03 06:22 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

I have read of people directly pasturizing wheat straw, and people letting straw soak overnight to let endospores germinate before pasturization. Any thoughts/ comments on this ? As far as bulk substrates I have used exclusively dung in the past. I am about to start a project using 3 bulk substrates.... straw, straw mixed with worm castings, and straw mixed with dung, so just trying to find out how not to screw up my grow beforehand !! Let me run this by you guys... this is my tek as planned.
1) shred straw using blender. Doing this, and mixing the shredded wheat in with the dense worm castings should create a bulk substrate which is easier to colonize... not to mention shredding the straw increases the straws overall density, which should add nutritional benefits....
2) let the straw soak overnight.... a) to germinate endospores..... b) to let the straw absorb moisture, making it easier to achieve a nice substrate moisture level, which i hear is slightly more challenging with worm castings.
3) mix straw with horse poo in pillow case, pasturize via roadkill tek. mix straw with worm castings, and pasturize in the oven, using an oven bag and candy thermometer to get the temp right.
4) Create my gigantic cake.... cut a gallon sized gatorade bottle in half (horizontally, duh). bottom casing layer... potting soil. absorbs water wonderfully, colonizes really fast, and contains perlite, to wick that moisture upwards throughout the cake.... second and fattest layer, my bulk sub. Mix in some pf cakes colonized with pf classic. let incubate until colonized.
5) add top casing layer... most likely 50/50 coco coir verm. let colonized.
6) cold shock and fruit.

I have used this tek on a smaller scale... using the same bottom casing layer, a 3 liter bottle instead of gallon sized, a single pf cake as substrate, and a top casing of pure v erm. it worked very well, I got four flushes, about a half ounce dry. Im hoping to super charge this previous tek.... Any thoughts, ideas, opinions? I start everything tomorrow, and will post a grow log. so any comments before i start would be awesome ! thanks a lot ppls,

<3

Spores may be too hardy to destroy but once they germinate they are suspectible to attack.
