Dry Rye Berries
    #12561639 - 05/14/10 12:29 PM (14 years, 8 months ago)

Ive been searching through the forums for anyone who has had the same problem as me but most people have posted about their rye berries being too damp.

Ive got several jars on the go at the moment and they are growing nicely but the rye berries in the bottom centimetre of each jar seemed to have dried up. The rest of the berries n the jars look okay and have good mycelium growth on them.

Im not sure if I should just let the stuff grow or try get moisture to the berries at the bottom? And if i need to get moisture into them how should I do it?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Shake ONCE at 20-30% colonization.

Doubt that.  And, if so, link please?

It days 1-2 days for mycelium to recover so why would anyone shake daily? And if you shake them so often, how none of the mycelium goes bottom?

Be patient.  Don't shake so much.  Your humidity and the water saturation in the grains should reach an equilibrium in a few days.

Also, sometimes grains look dry on the outside, but they still have enough water inside to allow colonization.  As long as they have not shrunk back to pre-cooked size you are probably ok.

Squirt spore solution, or LC against the glass, 1 squirt in each corner of the jar & one squirt down the center. Doing so, allows you to see colonization against the glass. As below.

The object of shaking a grain spawn jar at around 25% colonization is to spread colonized grains evenly throughout the jar. Then, those grains heal, colonize further & spread colonization to other uncolonized grains they are touching.  As those grains colonize, they inturn spread colonization to those they touch, like a chain, link after link, after link until the complete content of the jar is colonized.

Shaking more than once breaks that chain, batters what is colonized & slows colonization. Only shake once around 25% visible colonization. Any more hinders & slows the process.
