Anyone think it would be beneficial if one were to use the water you soak rye in, for making up some MEYA or PDYA?

All the nutrients you need in agar is in there, no need to add anything. I make my own with agar agar, potato flakes, honey and water, and it works fine.

Clean soak water might be good. Try it, see what you think.

Go ahead. I just don't understand what "added benefits" you would be looking to get out of it.

Soak water doesn't usually look very clean, its dark and smelly (compared to clear water). But of course you sterilize it. Tell us how it worked.

Wouldnt the water from the rye soak be full of endospores and other contaminants that sprouted during the soak?

I dunno man, shit, it seemed like a question worth asking. It's just water that goes down the drain. If it works as an agar nutrient, why not...it's just being more efficient. An added benefit would be if it encouraged rhizomorphic growth better than, say, MEA. Some say PDYA does that. But like I said, it's just "waste" water, going down the drain....why not.
I do agree though, it doesn't look great...But like someone said, it will be going through the pressure cooker. And if it's a waste, then omg, I'm out a sleeve of dishes....ohly 45 or so left, darn.

I'm not trying to get under your skin or anything, just trying to understand your purpose here. The question just seemed like (to me), "If I put more gas in my car, will it run better?"
I would wonder if you would even want to encourage rhizomorphic growth from lower performing sub-strains. Say, you have two petris, one with your everyday agar mix, and one that "encourages" rhizo growth, and you inoculate both with the same sub-strains. The regular one may show the strain growing slowly, while the other one takes off. You'd be creating a parameter where you're fooled into thinking it's better than the regular one, when it's actually the same sub-par performer.
It's not what you put in the agar mix that tells you which would be a better performer, the strain itself should tell you that.

I've tried corn soak water without success. It looked really messy and cloudy. I think If I would have added a bit of agar/sugar it would have worked, but I dont know if the nutrients from the grain soak itself would have played much of a factor. GL on your experiment.

Right on, that's what I was mostly fishing for, similar, first hand experience.
Thinking about it more, now with all this feedback, this probably won't work out. Plus, this is multispore we're talking about here...Taj is right, so the results would be misleading from the get go.
The amount of nutrients in the soak water probably don't contain nearly as much nutrients as, say, malt extract or potato broth. But, on the other hand, I've heard it said a weaker agar promotes the rhizo growth we all like. But really, without mashing the grains up, you probably aren't getting too much 'good stuff' out of them, huh?
But, just for shits and giggles and the fact that I've been pretty bored lately, I'm going to use it in place of regular tap water in the next couple days. If anything interesting happens, I'll let you fine folks know. Don't hold your breath.

Just keep an experimental mindset about it, so there's no disappointment if it fails.
The soak water from your rye will be nutrient rich, sure. I would re-simmer the water, and skim the "scum" off before using it. Should clean it up a bit.

It'll work I've soaked oats and added that water to my agar mix grain water should work fine. Go for it
