Creating a sterile LC?
    #12561297 - 05/14/10 11:03 AM (14 years, 8 months ago)

Could anyone recommend a good tek for creating a sterile LC?

Also, can Lc's be stored long term stock cultures so you can be self reliant? I haven't had much luck creating lc mixtures in the past

sorry, I'm not ignorant, or lazy, just a little confused here.

now that I think about it, can an LC be used as a stock culture? as in stored for a while, to use as inoculant? or can you colonize a grain jar with it to store as a stock culture?

IME, "good" and "LC" don't usually collide in the same sentence, especially long term.

Others have success with them.  People can recommend teks all day, and it'll only make you more confused.

I think you should just pick one that suits your comfort level and go with it.  Or pick a few, and go with the one that works best.

If you want to store an LC do so in the 'fridge.  I haven't been in this hobby long enough to have anything in my collection, spores or cultures, that are a few years old, but your LCs should last some years if stored properly and not contamed.  If you're going to make an LC go with light malt extract, which is easy to find from a brewery supply and is only about $6 for a pound:

LC is the last thing I would depend on for long-term storage.  The couple LCs I've bothered doing were disposed of after watching them in a few different trays.  ~P~

I've read that some people have better luck getting grain LCs to keep as stock culture since they're non-nutritive but of course YMMV.

Both, yes. LC's are an all or nothing deal. You won't know if they are contaminated until you test them in test jars. So if you are not sure of your sterile technique, I would be thinking grainmaster then G2G, or agar for culture stock, hell even master culture slants.

Two different LC recipes side by side;

LC's are fun but G2G's are quicker and more goof proof.
