Why didn't they fruit?
    #12560971 - 05/14/10 09:43 AM (14 years, 8 months ago)

So this was my first run at the monotub. Stuff started out well, but I think I made some beginner mistakes  My green house is up and holds high rh with a lot of fae and I've got a few trays colonizing right now but I want to make sure the same mistakes don't happen again. So all help is appreciated.

Here is what the tubs looked like 2 and a half weeks ago when I put them into fruiting conditions.

And here they are after 2 weeks and a few days

There was one pin coming from one tub, but it was small and seemed to be coming from the side and not the top... Is the tub contaminated or is it something else that I did wrong?

Substrate is really dry, did you mist enough? Even misting won't necessarily help. Looks like you got your initial water content wrong when spawning.

Sub turns yellow when it doesn't have enough water.

Someone may tell you to dunk it, then re-fruit it but I'm not an expert on that matter.

Also, was that getting enough FAE? Was there polyfill in those holes at one point?

Hmm... It colonized fine and didn't seem too dry and I misted 4-6 times a day  I dunked it after it had been two weeks to see if I could "rehydrate" it  and get it to pin but that doesn't seem to have helped much.

Yeah there was polyfil. I took it out when I moved those to my green house. It had a fan giving it fae 30/30 min.

It looked really good two weeks ago, and it doesn't look too bad now either. Put the polyfil back in and set it aside for a week. The dunk might have set it back. It will probably have some nice fruits sometime in the next few weeks.

So you think that there is some way of salvaging this? That'd be nice, I hate when a bunch of work goes to shit

I'd suggest casing to offset the moisture loss / lack of perfect conditions.  Might be too late to save that particular tub but it's worth a shot.

If you think making one tub is a bunch of work then you should go ahead and quit this hobby. If you really want fruits then you should have like two or three back up tubs right along side the one you have. And then two or three in the works behind those.

I'll give that a try today or tomorrow, I really don't want to see these die like this. Any "better" way of casing you would suggest to help save these or should I just do it like normal?

Casing it may jump start it.

u could take the polyfill out and put a sheet of waxpaper over top the sub. mist it lightly before you do that. pull the sheet up one or twice a day and check to see if it needs a slight mist then put it back on replace when wet. you need a balance between maintained high rh and enough fresh air to stimulate pinning. my tubs maintain about 80% humidity but below the wax paper its at anywhere from 95-99% humidity i supply constant fae to the tubs with an aquarium pump that runs 24/7. the combo of constant fae and maintained high humidity are what is important.

Haha I actually do have trays that are colonizing right now (which is why I wanted to make sure I wouldn't make the same mistakes on those) and I have bags of rye colonizing. I just got a green house, you think I would settle for two little tube  I just meant I hate seeing them come to this.

I don't think you need to case it. You said you just dunked the sub, so it should be hydrated. Just place the polyfil back in your holes and then set it and forget the damn thing. In the mean time start making more grain jars and more monotubs. Then, after a week or so, you may be surprised to find your forgotten tub to be full of mushrooms.

i wouldnt apply a casing. because of the health of the tub i feel like you run a risk of harboring contams and you wont see them right away. then again your tub could have stall because of an un-noticed bacterial contam that spread when you went to spawn.

Well if it was a bacterial contam then why would there still be a pin starting on each of them? And wouldn't it have shown up by now?

You should never have polyfill blocking fresh air when trying to fruit.  Fresh air is the number one pinning trigger.

Set the tray outside on a bright sunny day, and let direct sunlight shine on the substrate for at least ten minutes but not over fifteen.  Repeat daily until you see pins.

Thanks, will do

Would you recommend casing before starting that or just giving it plenty of fresh air and high rh until pins?
