Should I worry about colonizing jars? I could probably get them somewhere where the temperature would be a few degrees cooler, but not much.

id think every degree down would help, perhaps a fan over dry ice in the room. i guessing you dont have some sort of AC? cubes are tropical anyway, so i dont think a few degrees over them limit will be real harmful, it will slow them down a lil bit. what size jars?

Should be ok. Consistent temps that high would be bad.

Just some half pints. If it rains soon, it might stick around 83 or 84. I just really fear going to work and it not raining and being really sunny and getting to the upper 80s in my APT. But then again it'd probably be only be hot for 4 or 5 hours, and then start to cool off.
Fuck it, I'll just throw them in the fridge for a day! lol
Hmm, I hope I'm alright. I think I'll be.

I would say this is probably a bad idea. You will definatly give the myc a shock if you do that. I could be wrong as I have never put anything in the fridge before.
I say find a nice cool closet or something and let them sit there. Or, you could close your house up while it's still cool in the morning. It helps my house stay cool all day.

If it rains, I'm going to put them in the bathroom closet. Just cleaned yesterday, and it's probably 4 or 5 degrees cooler in there.

Damn, what a good idea. I think before I go to work, I'll put 2 pint jars near them. I don't even think I need the cooler.

There are still people that insist on using incubators even in summer months to colonize at 85-87F They'll be fine. Don't sweat it.

I've recently colonized at about 83 for a day or 2 due to a sudden hot spell and they colonized super fast and didn't contam, but I would try to keep it under 80 if possible.

Brief excursions to high temps are ok, but long term it won't work well. Maybe get an old fridge and set it to 75?

Do you have a crawlspace? Most homes do. Put them in a box, and stick in there.

Please tell me you have some sort of A/C in that apartment of yours.
Going by where your profile says you live,I am considerably further south of you.
Right now I am getting highs in the high 80's (and it's only going to get hotter) and the lowest lows are like the low 70's.
I keep my thermostat at 75-77 degrees fahrenheit and that's what it gets down to in my apartment....hell,get a cheap $99 window banger if you have to.
I can't see how anyone could live without air conditioning (unless of course they live somewhere that the temperature never gets above 70 degrees).

You could look around on craig's list and ebay for an evaporative cooler (AKA swamp cooler). You can usually find those used for a fairly good deal. Lot of maintenance with those, though.

It's being repaired. It needs it, too, because it will get up to 90 - 95 in here without the A/C.

If it's that hot in your house, move the jars to a shady spot outdoors. There's no reason for a house to be that warm unless you have no insulation. Open the windows at night to cool off your house, and then close them during the day to prevent heat buildup.
In my area, it gets up into the 90s during the day, but cools off to the 40s and 50s at night. I stopped using AC, as it's not necessary. I do as I suggested above. RR

What elevation are you at RR? I'm at nearly 8,000 ft, and it rarely gets that hot.

I figured this out a couple years ago very shortly after moving into a small condo that seemed to heat up way too quickly at the end of the morning. Works well. ~P~

See I live in a strangely set up apartment. Tee living quarters are upstairs on the second floor. So all of the air that gets to be 75 - 80 degrees in the basement rushes up into the apartment on a day that starts off hot, and then will cool down. Like today. On top of that we have giant bay windows in the front that act like a fucking solar panel. It's a bad combination. I've notified our landlord that it's not working, and he said he'd "get over when he could."
A couple of bad days in August last year we topped 92°F in the apt.

i read somewhere long ago that constant temps of 90 and above, colonization will be fast but there wont be any fruiting (sterile). is this true?
