so my dessication chamber is failing..
    #12560349 - 05/14/10 05:07 AM (14 years, 8 months ago)

im fairly sure that majority of the mushroms were cracky dry or atleast very dry , when put into baggies, but i noticed they had gone a little bit more wetter after checking them few days later, then put htem into a quickly made dessication chamber to dry the rest out, problem is that the chamber seems to be having droplets of water collecting in it, as you can see in the photos.

its made of basically a cardboard box, with two styorphome bits on the side and Damprid (calcium chloride) all thourghout the middle of it, i put a cardboard bridge over the middle and covered up the sides a bit so no mushies fall into the damprid. keep in mind the cardboard has some sort of glossy side put on it as u can see from the outside, and has been taped together with parts of the same cardboard that has the glossy material on the other side. The chamber doesnt seem to be working very well and im worried that the mushrooms might start rotting!!

is this chamber ok and should i stick it out? or should i get htem out of there and try again with a new chamber/method of totally drying.

help please!!

I think your problem is lack of gas exchange.  Get a fan going.

unfortunately i cant use a fan, i have no computer fans etc to put into it, can i just leave them onfront of a heater for days till they are cracker dry?

and also do desiccant chambers need to be airtight for them to work properly?

If I were you.. I would invest in some plastic containers (what I use is those plastic containers they sell lunch meat in). Find some type of screen that you can cut to size and wedge in the container (damp rid on the bottom of course). Looks like you have a lot to dry though so you would need a few.

I don't think there is a good flow between the shrooms and  your damp rid because if the cardboard 'bridge'. If you used some type of screen I think that would help.

Damp rid absorbs the moisture and your setup seems to inhibit what it can do a lot. maybe even just poking some holes in those 'bridges'. I would say go with some kind of screen though if you can.

Air tight does help, hence using plastic containers because they seal well.

ok, thanks. but im worried about why there are droplets of water showing up inside the chamber. i hope this doesnt mean the mushies will rot etc because i thought its sposed to dry them out not accrue droplets of water n stuff... hmmm.

You need a dehydrator. Plain and simple.

That's a lot of fruits for desiccant drying.

You could use your oven on warm to finish them off, too.

Here comes the debate on heat again.  Wait for it....................

Oh, and take the styrofoam out of that box.  The cardboard itself will aid in drying.

yeah i decided to put them in the oven just because of how many there were, there cooking at a real low temp and going to take them out after 3 hours.

i had to put the styrofoam in there to hold them up from the damprid etc. that desiccant chamber has failed. im going to make a new one using sealable plastic containers, damprid, and flywire mesh and jsut sit them ontop of it. i think it will work alot better.
