Mushroom Compost
    #12559906 - 05/14/10 01:50 AM (14 years, 8 months ago)

I found this stuff at a local store:
Filthy Rich Mushroom Compost
"Composition: aged bark fines, straw, composted animal manure, gypsum.
mix 1/2 and 1/2 with existing soil."

Has anybody seen this? I was thinking mixed 50/50 with verm for casing. Does this sound good? would I be better off going with verm/peat, or whatever? I need to do more research on casing recipes, recommendations accepted.

It is USED mushroom substrate, they recycle as garden compost.
Good for the garden, not good as a mushroom substrate.

Don't buy it. If you already have I guess you could grow tomatoes this summer.

Mushroom compost is used mushroom substrates usually from a large edible commercial grows. The process of correctly composting mushroom compost takes 2 years. Mushroom compost is great soil for another form of cultivation, my favorite soil in fact.

Not a good idea for a casing.  Wood, straw, and manure are all items that provide nutrients and should be used in a substrate, if anywhere.

I would stay away from using any compost that is intended to be a soil amendment.  The compost meant for garden soil is usually made to far lower standards than the compost you would want for growing mushrooms.  The higher price of compost from our sponsors is generally justified by their methods and starting materials.

K, I guess I had the wrong idea of exactly what this stuff was.
