 Sea Of Shrooms/Jiffy Mix

I'm planning on trying out the Sea Of Shrooms method for the first time. Its not only my first time using the Sea Of Shrooms method but its my first time casing period. Any suggestions for a newbie. I'm just curious to see how it worked for people who have tried it? Also, how is this Jiffy Mix as opposed to mixing your own 50/50?

Why shouldn't I have to worry about my casing mediums using the SOS? Do you mean don't worry about sterilizing or don't worry about the differences between 50/50 and Jiffy? Thanks

I've done the SOS tek and yes you do have to have a casing layer... and what better than a 50/50 + like jiffy mix! Infact, the SOS tek reccommends Jiffy Mix for a casing layer!

Jiffy Mix is 50/50! 50/50 comes in 2 ways that I have seen, it comes 50 vermiculite/50 peat moss with hydrated lime... and it also comes as 50 coco coir (coconut husk)/ 50 vermiculite with hydrated lime.
These are all 50/50 mixes!
You don't have to sterilize your casing mix, but it wouldn't hurt! You can even pasteurize it which is what I suggest. I put it in the microwave for 10 minutes total... just make sure your casing mix isn't dry! Also I would suggest you test your casing's PH balance becuase if your PH is off it could screw things up royally! Just do a search for PH, or PH balance to learn how to test and adjust PH levels!
Right now I'm doing a enhanced version of the SOS tek... it' s for fun to see the turn out... but here's what I'm doing with a spare 1/2 pint jar I have along with some horse poo:
I cut the 1/2 pint jar in 6 sections, and diced up each section... I then mixed it in the solo cups with some pasteurized horse poo... I'm gonna let each of these 6 solo cups colonize the horse poo... and at that time I'll put a 50/50 mix on top and pretty follow all the remaining instructions found in the SOS tek. The reason it's better is obvious... with one 1/2 pint jar you can make 6 bomb ass SOS tek casing cups... and lets not forget these mushies are fruiting off dung which means bigger fruits and higher potentcy:)

Hey what kind of terrieriam/growth chamber to you suggest for this tek? I was thinking the 2 tubs deal with aquariam heater under the fist tub blah blah blah. with perlite at the bottom and misting/fanning 2 times daily. what do you think?

I use perlite for humidification, and you won't need to mist with perlite, the perlite keeps it plenty humid in there... just make sure you have an air tight lid (or close to air tight) so the humidity will not escape! Do make sure you fan atleast twice a day though.
Once it starts fruiting I take out the perlite (or transfer the casings over to another tuppeware with no perlite and has a submersible fish tank heater) because it the perlite usually keeps it too humid, sometimes it's hard to drop the humidity down to 85% with perlite!

I really have to read that tek again. I thought it is where you put perlite in a large cup and put your cake on top of that and then wrap plastic wrap over the top.

yeah you gottah re-read a guess... no big deal.
It goes verm on the bottom of the cup... then half a 1/2 pint jar... then you put jiffy mix on top. Once it starts pinning they tell you to cut open the solo cup and place the whole casing cake on perlite (kind've like PF tek, but this is a casing cake so to speak).
The only thing I'm trying different is I'm using only 1 1/2 pint jar to spawn 6-8 solo cups of horse poo... then once that's colonized putting casing layer on! I can't wait to see my harvest:)

Well if you follow the SOS tek to the word you can only make 2 solo cup casings with one 1/2 pint jar. The way I'm spawning it on poo, I'm making 5-6 solo cups with just one 1/2 pint jar:) And these cups will grow bigger more potent shroomies due to there being horse poo!

Thats what I thought...when I saw the that you are making six jars I figured it was do to the use of poo. I was just double checking. Is the yield really that much better using the SOS as compared to using a conventional casing method and putting a couple jars in one casing?
