Shouldn't this Pin at some point???
    #1255721 - 01/28/03 02:31 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

(I read the FAQ, my air exchanges are 3 times per day, 8-10 hours of indirect light, humidity is fine.  Just to get that out of the way  )

I have two B+ casings in a terrarium.  They both looked about the same when I put them in (as far as colonization goes).  One casing is doing great...pins everywhere!  The other "looks" like it will be good...but it isn't doing anything!  Little white tufts of mycelium are peering up in several areas...they look like they might become pins but they've been stuck at this stage for several days.  They still appear fluffy though...not hardened...so I'm hoping it's not overlay.

Oh...strangely enough...on the non-pinning cake there is ONE sizable mushroom (3 inches tall).  Anyone have any idea what's going on?

Viking

Unfortunately I don't have a web cam or digital camera.

The temp is around ~75 degrees (fluctuates slightly over the course of the day...probably never colder than 73 or warmer than 80 though). Humidity is kept high, as I've been told this is ideal for pin formation. I bought a hydrogometer but it was a piece of crap, so I've been misting it 3-4 times per day (only a couple squirts each time). There is a thin layer of condensation on the terrarium lid, as well as the walls and on the mycelium (Anno told me this was OK).

Your conditions sound like they are ideal then.

I'd love to see a picture of the casing layer...that would tell us alot.
If your casing layer looks like it is almost covered in white(mycelium) that would be overlay.

What kind of casing material did you use?

The casing was straight verm, unsterilized. It is my first attempt at casing.

I'll try to describe the surface as best I can. About one half of it is nearly bare. Strangely this is the area where the large mushroom is growing out of. The other half has little tufts of mycelium poking up...they don't seem to be overtaking the verm, rather they look like they're just peering up from underneath. There are a few areas where the mycelium is larger...about the size of a dime, but most tufts are the size of a pencil eraser or smaller.

My other casing is much more colonized...I'd say about 60-70% of the entire surface is covered...but most of this surface is covered in pins (about 30-40 now).

Make sure and keep the verm moist...straight verm is hard to tell when its drying out.
This is why 60/40 Verm and Coco Coir is better IMHO.
You can tell when its drying out with the Coco Coir in the mix...cause of the coloring.

Your problem casing sounds like it wasn't colonized enough...and you should have patched it.
You might want to pull any pins...and patch the casing and colonize it some more.

The other casing with the 70% colonization with pins sounds likes its healthy.
Try repeating this.

good luck!

Thanks for the advice. A few people here told me it was OK to put your casing in the terrarium as soon as you saw mycelium, and that they experienced great results when doing this. Are they just lucky or is this incorrect advice?

I have a Lipa Yai casing that I recolonized a few days ago (ie: raised temp and covered in saran)...it doesn't seem to be doing anything so far.

About the watering, should I really give them a good soaking? Not to the point of causing puddles, but enough to really wet the verm?

Thanks
Viking

I don't mean to hijack your thread, but I really didn't want to start another one if at all possible...

I'm having a similar issue, but with B+ in a growbag. The substrate is almost completely covered in the white substance (mycellium?)... but it's been like that for some time. The bag was started in late October, and here it is the end of january and I am getting a little dissapointed. It has been kind of cold around here... really hard to keep this house warm with the shitty heatpump that we have. I've recently placed the growbag in a plastic crate with a small humidifier and the mycellium has spread over the entire surface in the last 2 weeks... but still no pins.

Everything I've read about the growbags says they are "idiot proof"... but I guess they've met their match in me.  :smirk:

Any advice for this one?

Toss it n the fridge for the night.
People that have problems with bags or have heat problems should look into doing stone bags.
