Piptopurus quercinus: the Oak Polypore??
    #12549666 - 05/12/10 04:01 PM (13 years, 9 months ago)

Does anyone have an accurate pic?? I found a mushroom recently that matches the description of an aged Oak polypore growing out of the heart of a big bur oak where a big branch fell off, easily 300 yrs old. Ill add my pics later. Its endangered in the UK due to lack of 250+yr old oaks but what about the rest of the world?

there's no way spores can go extinct before we do, im(unscientific)o, but what's the particular interest? i can get you mad birch polypore anytime you need it, but what is our mission here?

my mother said, to get things done, you'd better not mess with Major Tom...whose status is the baddest, everytime 'they' bless the apparatus

spores may exist but its normal substrate is at risk of extinction...unless it evolves to match a different tree the fruiting bodies wont be around very much longer...and im looking for oak polypore not birch...it seems what i found is not an oak polypore ...most likeley a deformed old Fomes fomitopsis, sadly ...thanks for the pics Herb
