when using grain as a substrate in jars oxygen is needed for the conversion of nutrients. Instead of using a pollyfill filter disc could i just use tyvek over the inoculation holes instead?

Yes you can do that. And grain by itself is a horrible substrate.

If you don't mind me asking. What would you use in addition to rye?

Don't get me wrong you can use grains as a substrate, its just that there are more effective aways to use grains that will yeild better results. I remember reading a book called the psilocybin growers guide or something like that, and the authors suggested casing grains in the jar and fruiting it that way. But that information is old news and things have changed.
The general concensus nowadays is that grain should be used as spawn to a bulk substrate like manure or straw or a combination of both. Spawning the colonized grains to coir/vermiculite has been found to be effective as well.

Ok, well that's basically what I am working towards but I would like to get comfortable with using grains and casing first before I move on to that. Thanks for answering my question.

i think the OP just got the term sub and spawn mixed up. Op when your grain is colonized mix with coir and gypsum atleast, you can use verm, i dont.
--------- 1 brick of coir (7-8 qts) < .7 qts of gypsum < 4 qts of verm -------- i read add verm to coir before you pasteurize. i add gypsum after the coir is at field capacity. -------
anyone correct me if im wrong.

if you mean you wanna case grain before you spawn to bulk- GOOD LUCK! i doubt you will get half the yield from straight grain than you would with spawning to bulk.

That sounds like a good idea to me. That's what did too. My first grow was back in the late 90's and I followed the directions in that book I mentioned, which was before I found all kinds of treasures on the internet such as pf tek and the shroomery. It's amazing how much things have changed over the past 15 years.

i dont think just verm will cut it. coir verm and gypsum.
---- 4 qts grain 1 brick coir 3 qts verm .7 qts gypsum = a mini monotub giving you ~.5 lb of fruit!

Garden gypsum from the garden supply store. The powdered kind, not pellets. A box is only a few bucks.

You can, but its a JOB & tough to get to a FINE POWDER. Not good for blender blades either, if you try that. Box or bag only costs like $6 for the powdered kind.

if you cant find it at the store. some big name stores dont carry it. you can ask for the stacks of drywall they use to separate drywall sheets. they seem kinda small but they are not. they are a few inches wide and probably 4ft long. its usually like 6 sheets that are glued together. make sure you get the plain white kind. not fungus proof or fire retardant. then snap it into easy to use pieces and put in a pillow case or something and small the shit out of it with a hammer. i use metal at first then a rubber mallet. im sure a small sledge hammer would work. def wear a gas mask. then put it in a sifter or window screen or something. do it in a small garbage bag or something. each one of those things that size should give you close to ten lbs of powdered gypsum.
takes some work but its free.
