Horse Poo

As I was browsing Craigslist I found someone in my area that posted the following:
"I have a huge pile of horse manure behind our barn. It is perfect for gardens or tilling up into a yard. I have a tractor to load it with, you haul it. Pick up all you want- its FREE! Can deliver loads for a fee. "
Sounds great aside from the fact I know nothing about horse poo. Are there things to look for? I know it shouldn't smell if its "aged", which is what your looking for, but other than scent what do I look for? And how should it be stored? I might take advantage of this and get a truck load of it, but I need to know how to store it so I dont have a truck load of moldy, useless, horse shit on my hands. Thanks guys!

From what I know you don't want Hpoo that was in a stal. If it was scooped up from a stal it means that the poo has been pissed on an that means its got umonia in it. That's all I really know. I don't know if it's impossible to use it or if it's just better to use hpoo from fields.

Wrong, what you want to do is grab a pitch fork and pick up some fresh poo. Its going to have ammonia, that's fine that why you leech it. Leave it out getting rain and sun for 4 weeks. If it isn't rainy in your area water yourself. If you decide to grab from "the big pile" its most likely going to have wood chips and other additives you don't want/need. Goodluck.

Find out if it's stall manure or field manure. Stall manure will do you no good because they mix the manure with cedar chips. Cedar chips are an anti-fungal.
Go with manure from the field. Bring it home and set on a tarp to dry.
Do not leech you manure. You will leech out beneficial nutrients the manure has to offer. Plain as that.
Pasteurize your manure @ 160-180 degrees ferinheight in spawn bags or jars for one hour.

Ham, why wouldn't you? Everyone is entitled to their opinions, I respect yours. I always leech and have fantastic results. What nutrients are you loosing by letting it get weathered? Ammonia is no good, why risk it?

What do you mean by "leech"? May have my terms mixed up and thinking of another form of cultivation.

As you said, lay on a tarp or as I do on plywood. Wet>dry>wet>dry etc.. Getting sunlight.

Ok.
Only see ammonia present in hpoo from the stable where horses are standing in one area all day and are probably urinating all over the manure from the stable. Another reason to be sure whether or not manure is from stable.
Just go with field manure. Chances are, horse walked or trotted off before he/she pissed on his/her shit. lol No need for the wet, dry, and repeat step or "leech".
Not a fan of this step anyways. Logic dictates that by rinsing your manure alone, with water, you would be washing/rinsing out valuable nutrients from the horse manure.
This is the reason why gardeners leech their soil because nutrients have begun to build up and lock out available ones. So you flush your soil with copious amounts of water to rinse or "leech" the soil of excess nutrients..
Just go with field manure from a horse pasture. Bring home and lay on a tarp to dry. In a barn, garage or shed. Once dry, hpoo will have little to no smell and will be ready to begin pasteurization.
The best way to obtain hpoo is to find a place horses are kept or a private resident who owns horses. Go knock on their door with a pair of gloves and a trash bag and politely ask if you may have some of their horse manure for your garden in your back yard.

Every horse poo pile differs. Some have wood chips & shavings some don't.
Just check it out. Get a pick up truck load, if it's not full of wood chips, or shavings, or rotted like dirt.
You can cure it yourself, if its still stinky stuff & piss soaked..
Lay it out somewhere in bright sunlight. Close to a garden hose if possible.
Wet it down, let it dry, repeat, repeat until it has no smell. Other than earthy & its good to go. Thats what rain does to it out in a feild.
I collect 2 or 3 pick up loads in late July, through August. When its hot out. Some goes in a compost pile. Some gets leached, dried, shredded & stored.
If there are feed stores around you. You can sometimes buy USED grain bags @ 0.25 cents each. They are great to store dry h/poo in.
I use a bunge cord to tie a bag over the exit of my shredder. Then, feed shredder until bag is full.
Tie shut with string, then store in my garden shed. Nice to have a bunch, dry, shredded & ready for use all year long. It will store for YEARS, bone dry.
Right out of the bag into a pot. Add verm & hydrate.
Then pasturize, cool & its good to go.
