Need help with possible pissy manure.
    #12551150 - 05/12/10 07:24 PM (14 years, 8 months ago)

So I got some horse manure from a farmer, "The best manure in the world!" he shouted. It has been in the stables, but is not mixed with straw. I got it from a big heap of poo outside the stables. It was dry and crumbled in my hands.

Since this is my first manure grow, I got quite skeptic to the manure when I inspected it just now.

What I fear is that theres urine left in the poo. Perhaps it didn't rain or something. Should I try to clean it in cold water like with rye and WBS? Perhaps it doesn't matter.

It has a weak smell to it. Not like piss, but something stabley about it. One crumbled, the poo is quite yellow. It discolored my transparent gloves.

Thanks!

If it doesn't have a urine / ammonia smell?
It should be good to go.
Mine sort of smells like a saddle blanket & garden soil combined.

Its hard to say and discribe the smell. I can't sniff any soil texture in my shit though. It's more the horse smell.

Do I wash, abort or just go? Say that it was some urine left, how bad would it be?

So long as you cannot smell ammonia, its good.
Horse smell is natural.
Just add some chunky verm & hydrate to feild capacity.
(70% moisture)

Squeeze test if you don't have a moisture meter.
Squeeze so only a few drops of moisture dribble out.

Can I wash it just in case? If I'm doing the pillowcase method, I'll have to get it all wet anyways.

Pasturizing in a plastic bag is far less of a mess than a pillow case.
Don't "wash" anything.
That removes nutriants.

Found this:

Quote:

I'd put it off for a day or two at least.  Ammonia really needs to evaporate rather than be washed away.  I like to use field aged manure, that has been rained on and had the sun bake it.  At least break it apart and spread it out in the sun tomorrow and rotate it a few times.  After that hydrate and use.  Don't use though if there's still any ammonia smell.

If you have to use it tomorrow, pick out the nuggets that are fully dry and don't stink, and then let the rest age for awhile.
RR

So even if I wash it, the amonia perhaps wouldn't go away.

Hmm, I'll probably try to find some really old manure tomorrow. Field aged deluxe.
