Ghetto incubator?

ok peeps just wanted to ask.. I know that when we are waiting for 100% colonization we want our jars in a dark place at 70-80 deg. Now its 69 deg. in my rubbermaid container. so i got my container and put it on the table and turned on the kitchen light.. with this light now i can get about 71-73 deg. in there.. I know we want this at about 78-80.. but will 73 really slow down colonization?

actually, you want it more up around 85 or 86 degrees F
Colonization WILL be slow at lower temperatures, and will be noticeable. I recommend getting a fishtank heater (under $15) and putting it in a jar inside the rubbermaid container. This should help incubate it.
a FOAF took an old dorm fridge, put a heater in the vegetable drawer with water, and attached a temperature gauge to it. He's had great results. A FOAF had 20 BRF cakes colonize in 3 weeks. It should be faster with rye/millet.

I dont recomend looking to Petsmart for fish tank heaters or similar stores, the only fish tank heaters I have seen there are over $25.

i always read the mycellium generates heat themselves and i think thats why 27 degre is supported. i want to ask if you inject them new and you wait for incubation .how does mycellium generate heat.i think that times i can put them in 30 degree .but from what moment 27 is better .

I make sure the air temperature in my incubator is around 82 degrees to allow for any heat the mycelium itself may generate.

You can get a vertical fish tank heater 100 watt for 8 bucks (fleet farm) and get a nice tall glass vase (walmart) for 2.50 use plastic wrap over the top of the vase to prevent the water from going up into the air. Works just great.

To me messing around with heater and water and other stuff doesn't sound like fun. Plus I hear standing water is good for generating contams.
I just bought a little space heater at Meijer's for $12. Using your rubbermaids keeps a nice even temp inside and also keeps the humidity up (it's dry here in winter) Check out the setup...
The temp is 85 inside with RH of 60-65%. If it gets too hot or cool you just move the containers closer or farther. I couldn't have asked for anything simpler.

Damn dude, that looks like a fire hazard. A space heater, all that wood and those clothes. Arent you worried about losing your mushrooms in a fire? Not to mention the fact that you probly have a lot of stuff in your house you dont want to lose.

top of the fridge thats been the fastest place i've found. *note it helps if theres a shelf above the fridge to help keep that area behind it and above it warm. Some freezers work to. Also think about all that nice warm air coming off that pc ur using. I know mine can heat the room but I run AMD's(space heaters for geeks)

and get busted Oh shit dude watch out my buddy bought one of those and the bastard caught his table on fire. We never did figure out what happened but he claims it was sitting up right like he left it burning. He got luck and was able to toss the table outside. I'd keep a eye on it 4 sure. That safty switch in those is junk to it will work for awhile though. I'd look into heating another way. That heats really dry. Do you have heat duct run under your floor into rooms? alot of times you can set a cheap thin tank on the floor and the heating system will work thru the floor. Just don't set it on a vent. I also found that shuting the smallest room off in my house at 70 that room can top out at 85 as long as the door stays shut. atics are also another option but they get really hot n the summer. I used mine untill I fell thru into the living room in ft of my wife. Needless to say that got shut down. Oh and 1 more thing thats kinda funy but works way better than heating pads is Heated Hunting socks. They run a 9v batts and last about 6-12 hours depends on batts. get u a set of 4 9v rechargables and go 2 town. I saw this done in a buddys dorm room but he was actually wraping the sock around 2 jars each. He also did it with filter patch bags just leave the filter sticking out.I'll give him 1 thing he used his head on that 1. I would have never thought of it.

Thanks. I'll keep an eye on it. Right now it only turns on for about a minute every 15 minutes, and the only thing that gets warm is whats right in front of the vent. Plus, it's not even hot enough to make my arm "hot".
...that floor vent idea sounds perfect

why the hell is everyone so parinoid about fire? if you use your brains that are smarter from the mushys...then you should know what will and what won't create fire hazards :P

If there's a documented national average of house fires/year due to space heaters then one could deduce that a realistic risk exists w/ such an incubation/g chamber setup. It's not paranoia, it's safety.

i'm just in a bad mood this morning i guess.... but i just keep hearing all this crap about heating pads and space heaters and fire hazards, and i'm using a heating pad and know that it won't cause a fire. ANYTHING given the WRONG conditions will produce a fire. but if you use common sence when setting up your setup, it shouldn't be a problem.

ive been incubating at about 65 for the past 3 months and its slowed down maybe a week at the most. pinning is what takes forever in the cold. Finally after 3 weeks pinning is taking place
