Well, I began my first fruiting stages just 4 days ago. So far none of my cakes have shown any results other than one. But I'll tell ya what, this baby has exploded! In just 4 days it has reached these stages:
Day 2:

Day 3:

Day 4(Taken today, just a few minutes ago):

Being as this is my first ever shroomie, I want to be sure I'm not fuckin anything up. Is this baby ready to be picked?

Yes.
Grab it near the base, and gently pull and twist.
Some growers recommend picking mushrooms just before the veil tears to prevent spores from being dropped in the fruiting chamber.
Enjoy.

Those guys are pretty phat. They will get bigger, but not much more potency. It's really personal preference.

Is there any specific method that you have found works best for drying?
Edit: also, to be clear, BOTH shrooms are ready to be picked correct?
DoubleEdit: I've also heard that cutting the base of the shroom is safer than just pulling it out. Is there some truth to this, or is it more or less personal preference?
Thanks for the fast replies shroomery

Yep, both.
Fan dry them until they're pretty much dry (they may still a bit flexible, the fan can only take them so far).
Then put them in a container with desiccant to dry completely.
Do a search for more details.
Edit: I would just twist and gently pull. You want the whole thing to come off.
If you cut, the mycelium left behind may revert from mushroom form, but it also may rot. Best not to take the chance.

desiccant is cheap, You can pick it up at home depot for like 4 bucks. Get the stuff called damp-rid it's used to dry out moldy areas of your house and you can get a refill pack that just has flakes of drying agent in it. Put that in a tupperware container and then place the mushrooms on some sort or rack above the desiccant so it does not touch it. Make sure to fan dry them first though.

Well, I went ahead and picked them. I have them drying out using a fan from a PC power supply. I have some Ice-Melter, will that be okay to use to keep them dry in a container?

Decent fruits there for a first.
Yes ice melter has been used before just make sure that they eventually become dry enough to basically crush into a powder.
Good job! hopefully you get some more though.

If I want to make a sporeprint with either of these, I'll have to do it before drying right?

probably too late, your sporeprint might be dirty if you take it now.. you wanna cut the cap and start printing immediately after you pick the fruit, but IDK it might give you clean prints , depending on how you handled and where you stored the mushroom so far..

hmm, after closer inspection I'm not so sure this ice-melter is the right kind to use.

"non-hygroscopic, will not attract moisture". Does this mean it won't work for the purpose I need it for?

You can use dry white rice as a desiccant.

hmm, this could be quite useful if I cant use that ice melter. Thanks!
Will I still need to seperate the rice from the mushrooms via some sort of rack?

Does rice always work? Or maybe the better question is how well does it work?
Also, man those look like they grew really quick. I have some invitro pins that are now in the FC and they aren't growing that fast. I wonder if I'm not getting enough FAE or if I'm misting to heavily.
Grow in signature.

Sure it works, to an extent, a lot of people put a few grains of rice in their salt shakers to absorb any ambient humidity, to keep their salt from clumping. You should fan dry first of course. And throw away the rice when finished.
You can put them right on the rice, no screen necessary.

You need to use silica cat litter or epson salt or damp rid to dry it. Buy a food dehydrator. All that other stuff is ghetto as hell. Seriously get a food dehydrator now. NOW. Stop fucking around with salt. I did it forever and if my dehydrator broke down now I would just toss out shroom rather than drying them with salt. Anyway good luck peace.

Care to recommend a specific food dehydrator? I'll definitely look into it, thanks for the tip
EDIT: Also, can someone confirm/deny the usage of that ice melter? You think it will work?
