Been 5 days..still no sign of colonization!!
    #1254737 - 01/28/03 08:51 AM (14 years, 1 month ago)

first of all this is my first attempt and i might not of done everything right, esp the PF substrate mixture. I have BRF/verm in there w/ distilled water. Boiled the jars for 1 hour and innoculated 12 hrs later.

one thing i noticed was that my substrate expanded after boiling and seem to be compacted in the jars w/ little space for air flow. could this have something to do w/ it? right now they're incubating in a rubbermaid with perlite for humidity, a heating pad. Should i start worrying now????

Sounds like it might be water logged, possibly water sloshed into some of your jars during sterilization

Well in my myco-bag I diden't seee any growth for 10 days, but withen the last 4 days, the mycelium has doubled in size.
It usealy takes anywhere from 2 days to a month,10 days is probably the ave.

Why not? I have it in my incubation chamber for my jars and I have no problems. I add water to the perlite now n then. Any water that may acumulate on the floor of my chamber I soak up with paper towel n disguard. I have zero contamination.

weasl take it from me man.. I have tried to see if there were any shorcuts and NOPE.. We have to learn to wait in this hobby.. I understand that you are dying to see this happen (as i am) but we gotta wait.. I just iculated on 1/26 so i am no where near to seeing anything,, Just bought a thrmo. today abd its only like 71 in my rubbermaid container.. I might have to get a heater as i want to be close to 78-80 deg.. maybe ill get one of those nice heat rocks..

Peace!

ps.. perlite will rise your humidity which as this point has no importance.. If yu need to have anything in there in a heater and thermometer for your readings..

the incubator link on annos page is nice for us newbies..

Why not?

Because humidity is not required for incubation. It is a waste of time and perlite.

I disagree with that. Though you can get away with small jars in incubation you need at least some air exchange for some bigger things. Try not making any holes in a quart jar and innoculate it. Growth will most likely halt.

lots of times %90 humidity .drives me crazy. i ddnt believe my eyes how things can go that fast..but the most and deadly suggestion is close your jar lids tight .or use fresh foil all the time and dont meddle with them to much.if you want to look them ,take them out .
